Ladd Acres Astros #2
EMPOWER! Every student ... Every day!
Welcome Back Astro Families!
Our school year is off to a wonderful start! Students are engaged and happy. Staff is excited and thrilled to see our Astros back from the summer break. Thank you for entrusting us with the task of being an instrumental partner in your child's educational success!
It was great to see so many of you at the Meet & Greet and at the Back to School Curriculum Night.
Thank you for your extra patience and understanding last week during our states smoky episode. We kept all students inside for most of the week and our students (and staff) were flexible and all persevered. We were all so impressed with our Astros. We are looking forward to clearer days.
Warm regards,
Francesca Sinapi
Principal, Ladd Acres Elementary

Background Checks: Parents, remember that if you want to volunteer, including attending field trips, you must complete the Background Check found on the district website. You can also click here: https://volunteerapplication.hsd.k12.or.us/
End of Day Dismissal:
Parents who are getting out of the car to pick up your child, need to pick them up under the 1st – 2nd grade pod under-covered area.
Parents who are staying in their car and NOT getting out, need to pick up children in the car turn-around area. Remember, parents need to STAY IN THE CAR when they are in line in the turn around.
*If your child can not buckle themselves into their seat belt, please park in the parking lot and pick them up under the 1st - 2nd grade pod covered area.
For safety purposes, please be sure the teacher knows if you are taking your child from the teacher’s line.
Morning Arrival: Many of our parents like to drive or walk their child to school. What a wonderful way to start your day! Please remember that all of our students meet in the cafeteria in the morning. We have options for students once there. Students arriving via bus or drop off will be directed to the cafeteria by staff members.
FYI: The before school drop off area (turn around area), is only monitored from 7:20 – 7:40 so proceed with caution.
Parking Lot: Drivers, we need your help. Please remember that if you chose to drop AND walk your student into the building, use the cross walks or cross behind the buses. Our buses are large and cannot always see small students crossing out of their view.
Walkers: If you walk your student to school, please review our suggested walk paths. See the map below or click on this link: https://www.hsd.k12.or.us/cms/lib/OR02216643/Centricity/Domain/92/Elementary%20Suggested%20Walk%20Paths.pdf
Community Learning Garden
This year our students are participating in some unique cross content lessons using our Community Learning Garden. This program is brand new and, at this time, we are the only site in the district with this opportunity. Cindy Davidson, a licensed teacher and Ladd Acres parent, has joined our staff part-time to teach on Wednesdays beginning at the end of September. Our wonderful PTA is sponsoring her salary to benefit all our students. Thank you PTA!
Throughout the year our students will have had at least 12 garden class times where they will help care for the garden, participate in a variety of STEM activities, and try the fruits and vegetables that we are growing. It is also our intention to merge the work we are doing with our Chinese class in order to bridge both cultures in a very special way.
For more information, contact Mrs. Sinapi or Mrs. Davidson (davidsoc@hsd.k12.or.us).
The Astro Academy!
A Wellness room is a combination of specifically chosen occupational therapy tools, physical therapy exercises, and behavior training tools. Our goal is to help kids learn to be calm, alert, and ready to learn through the identification of specific tools they can utilize to continue their academic success!

Our School Snack Program
With your help, Ladd Acres Elementary School would like to start a Snack Program available for each of our classrooms. As you know, it is tremendously challenging for our students to grow, participate and learn when they are hungry. It is our hope that with regular and continued community support, we can begin to meet the needs of all of our students. Ideally, our snack program will include a combination of non-perishable items. If possible, we are looking for community donations of non-perishable items which may include granola bars, pretzels, fruit snacks, goldfish crackers or additional items. Please consider donating to our snack program if you are willing and able! (Donations can be turned in to the main office.)
Thank you!

The BOND: Building for our Future
The Confucius Institute at Ladd Acres
Ladd Acres is recognized as one of the nine sites offering Confucius Classrooms in Oregon this school year. This year will be our 4th year offering this program at Ladd Acres.
The Confucius Classrooms program is administered by PSU’s Confucius Institute and is intended to expose students in the U.S. to Chinese language and culture and develop positive cross-cultural attitudes and behaviors.
Students and classroom teachers spend 30 minutes each week with their visiting instructor. The Chinese teacher also spends additional time with grade levels on a rotating basis to integrate appropriate and authentic real-world connections to topics already being studied in the classroom. At Ladd Acres, our Chinese teacher will also partner with our Garden teacher to provide cross-cultural, garden based lessons on designated Wednesdays. We are thrilled to send a group of students to China this Spring too. Look for fund raising events to support our traveling students.
At this time, are still looking for a host family. Hosting a guest teacher works like an exchange student. Our visiting teacher would live with a family and participate in family functions as available. Families hosting a teacher will receive a stipend monthly. If you are interested in hosting our teacher, please contact Mrs. Sinapi.
Parent Involvement Needed for Site Council

The program operates by the first come, first served basis.
