South Callaway R-II Schools
Quarterly Newsletter ~ Celebrations in Education ~ 10/2/23!
Our District Mission
South Callaway R-II is a school district that produces graduates who enter the adult world as Success Ready citizens. School personnel and parents work together to ensure students become critical thinkers, creative problem solvers, efficient collaborators, and effective communicators.
Early Childhood
Wow! This school year is off to a fantastic start! Students and teachers returned to school with positive attitudes and were ready to work hard! Each day students are reminded that learning is a lifelong process and we are here to support them along the way.
Did you know that missing 10%, or about 2 days each month over the course of a school year, can make it harder for children to develop reading and math skills, build relationships, and develop a positive attitude about school? Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves. When students start building these habits early in life, they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Eventually good attendance will be a skill that will help them succeed in high school, college, and LIFE! Here are a few tips:
Develop regular bedtime and morning routines.
Have clothes laid out and backpacks ready the night before.
If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers and school counselors for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning.
If your child must stay home due to illness, ask the teacher for resources and ideas to continue learning at home
Check out www.attendanceworks.org for more information about school attendance.
Future World Changers Find the Leader Inside!
The Early Childhood Building started the quarter out with our first group of Future World Changers (FWC). These students are nominated by their teachers and are celebrated for embodying one or more of the 7 Habits of the Leader in Me model. Students are nominated twice a month and are showcased at our Friday morning meetings. Parents are encouraged to have lunch with their FWC after they have been presented to the school.
-Ride Home Conversation Starter-
Three questions parents can ask about the Leader in Me habits: Which of the habits is your favorite or easiest to follow? How do you know when you are following a habit? Which one is hardest for you?
- Habit 1: Be Proactive®
- Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind®
- Habit 3: Put First Things First®
- Habit 4: Think Win-Win®
- Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood®
- Habit 6: Synergize®
- Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw®
Introducing Our New Parents as Teachers Coordinator!
Meet Sara Mealy
Parents as Teachers Coordinator
Mrs. Sara Mealy is no stranger to South Callaway R-II Schools. Having raised five children in the district, she knows just about everyone she encounters. This, along with her outgoing personality and genuine devotion to our littlest Bulldogs and their parents, is the perfect combination as she joins the Early Childhood team as our Parents As Teachers Coordinator.
Sara's Message for Parents!
Children come into this world ready for love and learning. YOU are your child’s first and, most influential, teacher. My role as a Parent Educator is to inform, support and encourage parents in this important role. The program provides personal visits, in your home or at school, group connections, screenings, and resource connections. A recent group connection was the Roll & Read. Families met on the Katy Trail to learn about literacy, exercising, and nature. Spread the word and invite anyone who lives in the district with children birth to kindergarten entry to our upcoming fun and free group connections listed in the Mark Your Calendars section below.

Middle School Quarter Two - Continuing the Celebration!
A Message from the Principal
With so many moving parts during the school day, it is easy to forget to acknowledge all of the wonderful things going on around us. With roughly a quarter of the school year behind us (Boy, did that go fast!), I want to take a moment to celebrate some of those things.
I was raised in Southern Callaway County and attended school at SC in the 80s. As a student, I very quickly realized that its buildings were littered with teachers who cared very much about their students. Things haven’t changed much over the past 35 years, and I am so thankful for the teachers I get to work with on a daily basis. They are a very professional, dedicated and caring group of individuals who want what is best for students.
Some highlights of their wonderful work include:
- Students are taking full advantage of clubs, i.e., Science Club, Student Council, Drama Club, etc. It has been great to see the large amount of interest in clubs this year.
- Mrs. Spencer has begun inviting speakers from the community to visit with elementary and middle school students. Over the course of the semester students will have heard from representatives from the Missouri Department of Conservation, American Family Insurance, GSE TrueNorth, Callaway County Emergency Management, Fulton Police Department and a retired nurse. It is always great to have people from the community in the school buildings!
- Mrs. Hooker (formerly Ms. Gant) created a “Star Singer Award” where students in Choir recognize the positive things their peers are doing.
- Student numbers in Strength & Conditioning classes have continued to increase. As such, the weight room has been expanded and more equipment had to be added.
- To date, discipline referrals have sharply decreased this year. I expect we will continue to see this theme throughout the entire school year.
- An updated curriculum has been introduced in English Language Arts and Health classes. Changes like these require a great deal of work from the teachers who are impacted. Luckily, they recognize the importance of not becoming stagnant and are happy to make the adjustments required to prevent this from happening.
- The South Callaway Middle School Band brought home first place in the Middle School Division of the Wright City Marching Festival Parade Competition on Saturday, Sept 23rd. The 32 member group performed the theme from the Magnificent Seven while navigating the parade route. The Middle School Marching Band's next competition will be October 14 at the Southern Boone Marching Classic Parade in Ashland.
I think it is also important to recognize the many, many wonderful parents, grandparents, guardians, aunts, uncles, etc. who live within the boundaries of Southern Callaway County. Kids succeed when stakeholders and schools support one another and work together. The old adage, “It takes a village to raise a child” certainly holds true, and to a very large degree this is the culture that has been firmly established within the district.
So, thank you for everything you do and all of the unwavering support you provide! I hope you will join us as we continue to celebrate the education of our students in the second quarter.

SCMS Principal

SC R-II HIGH SCHOOL: GRADES 9-12!
Welcome to All High School Students!
A Note From the Principal
The beginning of the 2023-2024 school year has started off very well. Our high school students are highly engaged in academic studies throughout the day and we have a very strong number of participants in our extracurricular activities. A week ago was the 2023 Football Homecoming. The HS student council created a variety of fun ways to participate in the Spirit Week. Students dressed up during themed days and worked together to decorate their portion of the Commons to prepare for the dance. We ended the week with a district wide pep assembly at the Athletic Complex headed into our big game night.
Now that we’ve officially been in school for over a month, we reflect on some of the initiatives we start each year; including, our student handbook review, the SEL (social emotional learning) pre-assessment and scheduling our additional academic support during the day and at the end of the day. The student handbook was covered on day #1 and followed up with our safety drills. Parents received a copy of the handbook quiz the students took and were asked to sign and return to the Seminar teacher a document to show understanding and support of the handbook. We are in our 2nd year of using the social emotional learning assessments to better understand our students' needs. Catch Up Cafe on Fridays along with After School Tutoring from 3:05-3:30 on M/T/Th are supported by our classroom teachers who work with students in smaller groups in academic areas. The combination of working on social/emotional skills and academic support time by teachers provides a consistent structure our students can count on and learn from.
Research from several sources shows teachers and administrators feel pressure to prioritize academics over SEL. That is despite the fact that “we do have good evidence from a research perspective that SEL schools truly matter, not just for school today, but in terms of long-term success well beyond graduation,” said Ben Court, senior director of K-12 research at EAB, a top education research firm. To preserve SEL, district leaders can merge academics and SEL conversations through strategic planning exercises to emphasize that social-emotional development is central to academic development (Arundal, K-12 Dive.com, 9/12/23). At SCHS, we have Seminar meeting twice a week with smaller grade level groups working to build community and learn how to improve the 5 SEL skills:
Self Awareness
Self Management
Responsible Decision Making
Social Awareness
Relationship Skills
We have a team of teachers who are using the data taken from our SEL Pre-Assessment to create SEL lessons for Wednesdays. Our students' participation and the learning opportunity will benefit them by improving their current level of skill and has credit earning potential. The students will take the SEL Post-Assessment in March so that we can determine individual growth and overall grade level skills growth. The resource we use comes from ACT (Success for organizations) which also provides learning standards for the ACT assessment students use for college entrance.
Everyday the students and the adults at SCHS make our best attempt to get better! And it’s always a great day to be a BULLDOG!

Let's Talk About Technology & Transportation!
Technology
The technology department has been working diligently to ensure that both students and staff have quality devices to use as a tool for learning. Cyber Security continues to be a key part of our work here at SC. We work every day to ensure that students and staff have the ability to use technology to improve learning, and instruction in a safe manner.
A couple of reminders for parents and students as the school year continues into the fall.
Lost / Damaged Cables - New cables and power supplies can be purchased from the technology department, or may be purchased independently from a 3rd party.
iPad Cases - Please keep iPads in the cases and avoid removing them for any reason, as damage can occur when removing iPads from cases.
iPad Damage - Please report iPad damage to your classroom teacher, or building library as soon as damage occurs.
Transportation
The transportation department has settled into the new school year. Buses and route adjustments are working out really well, and everyone is becoming more familiar with the time adjustments for each route. We are thankful for the new road surfaces on highways C, AD, and CC. The new surfaces are a welcome change for both our drivers and our riders!
If you know anyone that would like to be a bus driver, we provide competitive pay, flexible schedules, and a great group of people to work with. Please reach out to tucker.bartley@sc.k12.mo.us if you or anyone you know is interested!
Teaching & Learning... The SC Way!
Ever Thought About Becoming a Substitute Teacher?
It's been in the news a lot lately. There is currently a statewide shortage of substitute teachers. Although South Callaway R-II is among those who have tried very hard to maintain our own district-managed substitute support team, we have not escaped the effect of this shortage. The number of active substitutes on our list is currently lower than what is needed to provide coverage for teacher absences due to illness, family obligations, and the professional development experiences that are so vital to our continuous improvement of teaching and learning.
Retired or inactive teachers who hold an Initial, Continuous, or Lifetime Professional Certificate in the State of Missouri are prequalified to be a substitute teacher. All you need to do is have a background check and apply on our website. For all others, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has recently added multiple routes to becoming as substitute teacher. Serving as a substitute teacher still requires certification through DESE and a Missouri Highway Patrol background check, but now there are several ways to qualify.
- For those with a high school diploma, there is now a 20-clock hour online course providing training in key areas that will prepare you for serving in any classroom. Once it is completed, candidates may use completion of this course to file an application for a Content Area Substitute Certificate.
- For those with at minimum of 36 semester credit hours of college education in any area, no additional coursework is required for the Content Area Substitute Certificate.
- Those seeking to substitute teach in Career Technical Areas (such as Nichols Career Center or other trade school) will need a bachelor degree and 4000 hours of occupational experience, or an associate degree and 5000 hours of occupational experience, or 6000 hours of occupational experience.
At South Callaway R-II, we require applicants to hold a valid Professional Certificate or Content Area Substitute certificate and a pass a pre-employment background check. Expenses incurred for background checks may even be reimbursable after you begin working for our district.
This is a perfect job for those who seek part-time employment in a supportive school, are available to work between the hours of 7:45 am and 3:45 pm, and who love helping students grow and learn.

Opening ceremonies will start at 9:30 am with all events ending around 1:00 pm.
This is a fun day for all our kids and volunteers. We encourage all parents and others to come out and cheer students on. You can stay all day or join us for any portion for which you are available.
We would like to thank the following for sponsoring our event: Kingdom Phynx Fiber, State Farm-Brad Hutchinson, River Region Credit Union, Central Bank, 1851 Underground Tap and Grill, Callabyte, Glove Con, Coldwell Banker, Danuser, Kingdom Feed and Landscaping, Hams Prairie Store, SC Middle School Cheer, S&A Equipment and Builders, and Custom Promotional Branding.
We would also like to thank Willam Woods, Callabyte, South Callaway High School Students and all who volunteer to help run the events. It would not be possible without you, as well as South Callaway Booster Club and Cafeteria staff for providing lunch.
A special thanks to South Callaway Special Education Process Coordinator Gary Ash, who organizes the event to ensure all participants have a great time!

In addition to our Special Olympics Event on October 19th, the FFA will be hosting Food for America. There will be animals and other activities for the children to enjoy when they are not competing. Food For America is an educational program focusing on agricultural literacy in elementary schools and communities. It is a program developed to assist FFA members and all agricultural education students in leadership skill development as they reach out to youth, peers and their entire communities by sharing the world of agriculture.
-AND-
Lead and Treat is back! The Early Childhood building will be hosting our Lead and Treat event for grades PK-5 from 5:30-7:00 pm on October 30. There will be games and activities for all students. Kids can show off their costumes!
- THERE'S STILL MORE-
PTSO will be hosting a Trunk and Treat during the Lead & Treat in the EC basement.
Sportsmanship Celebrates Growth & Effort!
Did you know there is a nationwide shortage of umpires to officiate at school competitions of all types? Numbers have been declining for a few years and, recently, it has become harder and harder to get those essential officials onto the courts and fields. The shortage is very real and threatens to force some school districts into not playing a full schedule during their traditional seasons.
So far, South Callaway has been able to attract officials, but some have not been as lucky. There may come a day when we are among those who have trouble getting qualified individuals to officiate at sporting events.
What makes the difference in our ability to recruit? Some say it's all about the climate and culture of the district where the officials are called to work. We teach our students about sportsmanship from a very young age. Those who complete are told to have a positive attitude, give their best effort, shake hands with other teams, and support their own teammates with positive and encouraging comments. They are expected to accept the calls of the officials, listen carefully to their own coaches, and are reminded to never treat anyone in the game with disrespect or to respond in kind if they receive harsh criticism from others. And, those are the rules of sportsmanship for our young Bulldogs.
What do our Bulldog Nation of fans in the stands model for these growing athletes, performance, and academic competitors? We can now, and want to always be able to say, South Callaway R-II fans are known as a class act. Our district is blessed with excellent facilities that attract attention from all over the state. We also want to be known as the place where officials want to work and other teams want to play because of the welcoming character of our fans, coaches, and players.
As we enjoy a school year full of wonderful opportunities to support our athletic teams and extra-curricular activities, let's work together to make our district one that officials and other teams look forward to visiting. Let's celebrate our students' growth and effort through sportsmanship and welcoming behavior. And, as we continue to do so, thank you for making our district the place others want to come and play!
