Mrs. Clark's First Grade Class
2013-2014
Apologies, animals, and announcements
I apologize for the lack of updates! Spring has been very busy in our classroom AND in our home. But, we've had a great last few months and we're having a BLAST in our last few weeks of First Grade! LOTS of fun events coming up too...
This month, we have begun reading and writing NON-FICTION text. We did a mini-unit earlier this semester, but now we are really moving from the "learning to read" phase to the "reading to learn" phase. We have studied text features--features of the book that help us to gather information more efficiently as well as features in the book that help us to know it's a non-fiction text. We've also incorporated our Reader's Workshop lessons into our Writer's Workshop lessons...students have each selected an animal to research and are busy putting together their own non-fiction texts, complete with a Table of Contents, glossary, and other text features! We will have a publishing party on Friday, May 2 at 10:00 am where your students will have the opportunity to share their writing and their knowledge with you and others. More details forthcoming. Take a look at our hard work!

FIELD TRIPS AND FIELD DAY
Our next field trip will be next Wednesday, April 23. We will depart Rock Prairie at 9:15 and head to Cinemark for a private screening of the new Disney Nature film, "Bears". This ties in perfectly with our non-fiction unit! Parents are invited to meet us at Bee Creek Park around 11:15-11:30 for a picnic lunch. We will return to the school following the picnic. If you are taking your child home from the picnic, I must have a note. A permission form will go home later this week.
Additionally, we will have an End of the Year Picnic on May 23. More details will come soon. This will be held at Bee Creek Park.

Finally, Rock Prairie will be holding a FIELD DAY in late May. First Grade will compete from 8:30-10:00 on May 22. Parents are invited to cheer on their student and student's peers! Every child will participate in an event. More information will come home soon, but please mark your calendar!
Recyclable Materials needed
Next week, we will be conducting a special art project to go along with Earth Day and our research projects. Please help your child collect 3-4 recyclables to bring to school for the project. Things needed include: CLEAN and DRY milk cartons/jugs, water bottle tops, paper towel/toilet paper rolls, etc. I have plenty of cardboard and newspapers. We will be making a sculpture of the animal we researched out of the materials...from trash to treasures!
