Welcome to the February issue of the Connected Newsletter from the Division of Student Academic Success. This issue focuses on Mid-Term Progress Reporting for Spring 2021 and takes a look at the power of nudging.

Spring '21 Mid-Term Progress Reporting Monday, Feb. 22 - Sunday, Mar. 14th

The Mid-Term Progress Reporting Period begins on Monday, February 22 and extends through Sunday, March 14th. Mid-Term Progress Reporting offers faculty an opportunity to provide students with feedback at a strategic point in the semester to ensure students can take steps to improve their academic performance.


Instructors may issue progress reports for the following concerns:

  • Cannot Pass with Remaining Coursework
  • Lack of Participation
  • Missing Assignments/Homework
  • Never Attended
  • Poor Quiz/Test Grades
  • Stopped Attending Class
  • Technical/Internet Issues
  • Writing Skills Concern
  • Clinical Performance Concern (Nursing)
  • Graduate Student Concern (Nursing)


Students are immediately notified via email if they receive a progress report indicating concern. Click here to read the content of these messages. Students may access the details of their progress report(s) by logging into RaptorConnect, then clicking on the 'Reports' tab.

Data Insights from the Fall 2020 Progress Reports

In the Fall 2020 semester, 13% of students received a grade with their progress reports. Comparing student progress between grades entered on progress reports and students final grades, 26% of students improved by a full letter grade or more.


Among students that received an alert for missing assignments, 55% improved their final grade by a full letter grade or more. Among students that received an alert for poor quiz/test grades, 61% improved their final grade by a full letter grade or more.

Use Nudging to Drive Student Success

What is a nudge? A nudge delivers a message or structures a choice that encourages students to improve their behaviors yet leaves them free to act. The simplicity of a nudge can be effective, especially when it’s timely and personalized. Nudges can move the needle on student outcomes when aligned with students' academic, professional, or personal goals. Our own internal research found that students are 50% more likely to make an appointment when invited using the Appointment Campaign feature (a kind of technological nudging) than when they are invited using a more generic appointment invite.


Develop A Nudging Strategy

How can you use nudging and RaptorConnect to impact student success? Consider these guiding questions as you follow this example.


What is the goal of your nudging strategy? What student behavior are you aiming to affect?

  • Students register earlier for classes


Which students are you targeting?

  • Use Population Health Dashboard to identify students with negatively trending GPA and create your student list
  • Use your student list to easily create an Appointment Campaign

What is the desired outcome?

  • Student makes an appointment with advisor to select classes for next semester
  • Student registers for classes as soon as registration window opens


What action should the student take as a next step? What is the call-to-action?
  • Respond to Campaign Invitation to schedule an appointment
  • Discuss graduation plan with an advisor and register early to ensure class availability


When is the optimal time to send certain nudges?

  • Consider academic deadlines and advisor availability
  • Who else is communicating with this student?

How will you measure the success of your nudging strategy?

  • Campaign participation (Appointment Campaign Dashboard)
  • Intervention Effectiveness Tool can quickly compare students who attended to those that did not to determine who registered for the next semester

"The Murky Middle Project"
The Murky Middle is the sizeable but often overlooked group of students who manage to complete their first year with a GPA between 2.0 and 3.0 but still stand a good chance of dropping out before completing their degree. The fate of the Murky Middle student is just that—murky. This population demands attention, but with limited resources, it isn’t possible to target the entire group.
