Cedar Grove Friday Flash
November 10, 2017
Dear Cedar Grove Families,
Congratulations to the following students for winning the nomination for our Student Government Association (SGA):
Treasurer: Kata Buttrey
Secretary: Tyler Luskey
Vice President: Josie Hoffacker
President: Anjali Baron
All candidates should be proud of creating wonderful posters and sharing their speeches.
All students in second grade and selected students in grades 3-5 will be taking the InView assessment the mornings of November 29 and December 1. Parents, please refrain from making appointments for your child those two mornings and ensure that your child arrives to school on time, is well rested, and eats a healthy breakfast. Thank you.
Congratulations to Mrs. Stevenson's class and Ms. Schankel's class for winning the Feed the Bears participation contest for the months of September and October respectively. Feed the Bears is sponsored by our PTA and is an opportunity for parents to make a donation to support school programs. Some of these supports include purchasing a Promethean board for art and PE teachers, school-wide assemblies, guest authors, field trip supplements for all grade levels, Around the World Night, and Back to School and Spring picnics. The goal is to raise $11,000.00, and we have raised about one third of this amount. Your donations are confidential and can be made payable to the Cedar Grove PTA. Each month, the classroom with the most participation/donations wins a prize sponsored by the PTA. We are grateful for the support our families provide, and we appreciate the donations that have already been made to support school programs for our children. Thank you for your consideration in donating!
Also, a huge thank you to our PTA for providing a school visit by author Adam T. Newman for our students in kindergarten through third grade. The students enjoyed the program immensely!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Mr. Derby and Mrs. German
Canned and Boxed Food Drive
Please consider donating to our Canned and Boxed Food Drive to benefit Damascus HELP. Donation boxes are in the front hallway as you enter the school building and can be dropped off from now until our end date of November 17, 2017. Help us fill the food pantry at Damascus HELP for the cold winter months! Make a goal to bring one can per day of our drive. Thank you for your participation.
Center for Enriched Studies - Information and Meeting Reminder
During the 2017-2018 school year, all Grade 3 students will be reviewed by our MCPS central office for potential candidacy for the Center for Enriched Studies (CES); parents no longer submit an application. MCPS offers both regional and local programs. All Grade 3 students will be considered for a regional CES program, which is based on their address, unless they attend a school that houses a local program. Parent information meetings will be offered on November 13, 2017 at Kennedy High School and January 24, 2018 at Richard Montgomery High School. The central review process will occur after the second marking period. For additional information, please see the link below.
Reading and Writing Incentive!
The media center is proudly sponsoring a reading/writing incentive this new marking period! In order to get an entry form, students must check out three books from the media center, and read them (Kindergartners will check out one book in order to participate).
No less than one week later, the completed form may be handed in to the media center, but again the student must check out three books at that time! Students may only enter one time, with one title. The goal is to come up with a new book for one of six popular series. Students will create a new title and plot that does not already exist. Grades kindergarten-2 may have an adult help write the student’s ideas on the form.
All entries are due on Friday, December 8, 2017. Entries will be evaluated by Mrs. Hirschhorn for completion and then entered into a raffle. To enter the raffle, students will again check out three books. Winners will be chosen by December 15. If the pre-ordered title is not available by December 22, winners will receive a coupon to be exchanged for the title as soon as it is published and shipped to Cedar Grove ES. So let’s read and write and get creative!
