Mental Health Matters: Brought to you by the CCA School Therapists
This week we want to focus on Domestic Violence (DV) Awareness Month. This month works to connect individuals and families to organizations working on DV issues and to raise awareness about domestic violence and intimate partner violence. The local organization is Domestic Violence Intervention Program (DVIP), and they provide support and advocacy services to victims/survivors. If you have questions or need help, call 1-800-373-1043 or visit their website https://dvipiowa.org
Domestic violence can present itself in many ways, such as intentional physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, threats, and economic control as part of a systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one partner against another. Domestic violence is prevalent in every community and affects all people regardless of age, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, or nationality.
Research shows that even when children are not direct targets of violence in the home, they can be harmed by witnessing its occurrence. The witnessing of domestic violence can be auditory, visual, or inferred, including cases in which the child perceives the aftermath of violence, such as physical injuries to family members or damage to property. Children who witness domestic violence can experience severe emotional trauma and developmental difficulties that are comparable to children who are direct victims of abuse.
We have an exciting opportunity coming for 7th-12th graders– The Scanlan Center for School Mental Health will be coming to CCA to facilitate a Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) Group for 6 weeks starting in November. Here is more information about DBT. Please e-mail myleenagrenis@ccaschools.org to participate.
If you have concerns for your student’s mental health please reach out to their building school counselor who will assist by meeting with them, connecting with therapy or other school and community resources. We are so blessed to have such an amazing group of counselors.
In the spirit of spooky festivities, here are some ideas on how to talk to kids about scary films.
There are many new extracurricular activities and fall community-based activities. We dare you as a family to try something new! Modeling your own vulnerability will help your student take healthy risks getting more involved at school. Here is a helpful article to assist when teens resist extracurriculars from Screenagers.
As the season shifts to colder temperatures and soon shorter days, this is a great opportunity to create new daily habits which are good for your mental wellness. Try this “Positive Bookend” for your day.
Health Services Updates
It’s National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week
October 24-30, 2022 is National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week. Over 500,000 children have blood lead levels high enough to compromise their health (CDC). The good news is, lead poisoning is preventable. By identifying sources and risk factors, you can help prevent your child from having a high blood lead level. Sources and risk factors of lead contamination include some of the following:
•homes built before 1978
•water pipes
•candies
•toys
•jewelry
•home remedies and medications
•jobs or hobbies
•foods
•cosmetics
•soil
Lead poisoning signs and symptoms may range from nothing at all to serious symptoms including developmental delays, growth delays, hearing problems, speech problems, attention deficits, seizures, and even death. Most children are tested for blood lead levels during early childhood wellness checks. If you are uncertain about your child’s testing status or results, please discuss this with their healthcare provider.
For more information on lead poisoning awareness and prevention, please visit www.cdc.gov/nceh/lead.
