Marauder Moments 2022
Freshman Edition
Message from Dr. Avery and Miss Chaya
Dear Freshman Families,
We are so excited to welcome your child to our building on August 29th. Sending a child to the high school can be daunting, but we are here to support you and your child in having a great year and high school career. We will send our newsletter out to you each month in your email, and we know how important is is to keep connected to your high schooler and know what's happening while letting them build independence. You will also receive a newsletter from our Counseling Department with information about opportunities, social-emotional strategies and supports, and academic planning tips.
You can check out our website for daily announcements and a special page we will update just for freshmen. You can also follow us on social media. Our Twitter posts from @WilliamsonHS1 will appear on the website, and we also have an instagram account williamsonmarauders. We try to post often so you can see what your kids are up to when they are here.
On the morning of August 29th, your child will meet their upperclassmen mentors who will help guide them through the year. These are students who have applied and been selected to be a friendly face and help your child get off on the right foot here. They will participate in some get-to-know-you activities, talk about school, and give a tour with practice opening their locker as well. We will make the parent format using the feedback you gave us in the survey sent July 23rd.
If your child (or you) are new, or just feel better getting a lay of the land, we are happy to provide you with a private guided tour or feel free to come wander around on your own. Our office is open from 8:00am-3:00pm this summer, and 7:00am-3:30pm starting August 29th.
Thank you!
Dr. Avery (kavery@williamsoncentral.org) and Miss Chaya (hchaya@williamsoncentral.org)
Supply List
We realize that students' course schedules are not ready yet, so you may not be entirely certain if you are in a specific elective, but the list is very minimal and we will let you know when student schedules are available later this month. If you really enjoy the process of supply purchasing or have a student with specific preferences, we are happy to send you the full list.
We hope you are enjoying your summers and look forward to welcoming our students back September 7th.
10 things we want you to know as you send your kid to high school…
It will be ok. Really.
They did learn something today, even if they say ‘nothing’ when you ask what it is.
If you notice something seems off or wrong- it probably is. Give us a call and we can figure it out together. All behavior has meaning.
If your child never has homework they are probably not doing it.
No, not everyone is doing risky, naughty things.
Most of them eat lunch without their phones in their faces (so they can do that at home too). The majority of them really do talk to each other at lunch.
Our kids are the best-behaved, kindest kids you could find in any school. You’ve done a great job raising them. Thank you for sharing them with us.
Your kid will be really tired in the morning but they need to come in on time. Attendance is critical.
It will be really difficult at times to watch your child struggle without jumping in to rescue them, kind of like when they learned to walk. Now, instead of smashing their face on the coffee table they have grades, opportunities, and emotional well-being for you to worry about. They need to know you believe in their ability to become independent and advocate for themselves. It is a tenuous balance between being there to support and hovering.
We will love them-on good days and bad days and we will say no sometimes, and yes go for it, and put boundaries in place for them, and push them, and be there for them-and you- through the struggle.

Community Service
Serving others is something Marauders do well!
A little discomfort is normal! That is where we grow. We are here to help that be manageable.
Water Bottles
We encourage all students to bring a reusable Water Bottle with them to school. Please help us promote sustainability, and stop the wasteful use of disposable cups. We are also collecting donated reusable water bottles in the Main Office for those who need them.
