Emotional Health in School
The school year is coming to an end but hopefully the learning and practices will continue throughout the summer. This year I had the privilege to come aboard the PCS team and get into the classrooms and teach about “Us”. Students learned how to identify feelings in themselves and others. They learned not only does sadness come with tears and happiness come with smiles but how their entire body responds to everyday emotions. It is so important to understand ourselves so we can understand others and grow more empathetic and resilient as individuals. Students learned skills for calming down and how to stop and think before reacting to their strong emotions. Students were learning these skills through song, dance, stories, videos, conversations and roll play. These are skills we all need to practice; it is never a skill that is perfected, yet polished daily.
Over the summer as the days come and go remember to stop and breathe; don’t let the days fly by without reflecting on each of them. Work together as a family to continue to find ways to calm the emotions that want to take over and heat us up. The summer will be warm enough so find ways to “chill out”, “hold on” and enjoy the ride. Make summer play dates or social experiences a time to reinforce empathy, working together, assertion, building positive relationships and making good healthy choices.
Enjoy your summer with those great kids. I can’t wait to work with them again in the fall 😊
