African American Soldiers
Many African American Soldiers like Richie were treated unfairly. They were put on the front lines by their commanding officers, they were put on the most dangerous patrols, they had to do the worst jobs.
Here is a quote from the book:
"My father used to call all soldiers angel warriors," he said. "Because usually they get boys to fight wars. Most of you aren't even old enough to vote yet."
Plot Summary
Seventeen-year-old high school graduate Richie Perry had always had dreams of attending college. After he finds out he is not able to he packs his bags for the army. After going through basic training, he leaves for Vietnam with illusions of war. He is confident that his injured knee will be processed with the medical file properly so he will not engage in any combat. He also hears and believes in the rumors of soon-to-be peace and the romantic myths of war.
