MES NEWS
Here's what's happening at Milan Elementary School
We're Off to a Great Start!
First, a big thank you goes out to all who took the time to go onto the school website, create a parent PowerSchool account to update your contact information and fill out and submit your child's 'back-to-school" forms online. Updates were completed on 79% of our students. What a great response!
We started the year off with "Meet The Teacher" night and had an outstanding turnout of 86% of our families in attendance. In addition to our staff, several community groups helped make the night a success including our PTO. A special thank you goes to the folks from Samaritan's Hope Chest who were here the entire evening handing out backpacks and school supplies (pictured below) to families who needed help stretching their tight back-to-school budgets. These supplies were obtained through a grant from the Ripley County Community Foundation and donations from local churches. Thanks to their hard work and generosity all of our students had the supplies they needed to begin school!
School pictures were taken on Friday, September 2 and are back already! If you didn't get a chance to order but would still like to, look for online ordering information in your child's "proof" packet. Picture retake day is scheduled for Friday, November 4.
Our hardworking PTO just ended their annual fall fundraiser and the merchandise will be delivered in plenty of time for the holidays. We appreciate all the wonderful things they do for our school and encourage everyone to join them. The next PTO meeting is scheduled for November 16 at 5:30 p.m. in our school library. All are welcome!
Now, we're gearing up for Parent/Teacher Conferences on Tuesday, October 4 and Thursday, October 6. Our staff will be on hand to meet with parents both evenings from 3:15-7:00 p.m. If you haven't already arranged a conference time, your child's teacher will be contacting you soon to set up a time to meet. Report cards for the first grading quarter will be given to parents at the conferences. We hope to see you all then!
Pumpkin Show Prince and Princess Candidates Announced
We are pleased to announce that Madison Finn and Hayden Poole have been chosen to represent our school in the Pumpkin Show Princess and Prince Contest being held this evening, Thursday, September 22, at 7:00 p.m.
They will get to ride in convertibles in a short parade this evening and also in the Saturday morning parade on Sept. 29 at 10:00 a.m.
Madison is a student in Mrs. Burton’s first grade class and is the daughter of Patricia and Tyler Murphy. Kaden is in Mrs. Selmeyer’s class and is the son of Katie and Nick Poole.
We would like to wish them the best of luck and encourage everyone to attend and give them your support.
Classroom Ambassadors Named
Each year our teachers choose two students, one boy and one girl, from their classrooms to act as student ambassadors. These students serve as the official representatives for the room. They welcome visitors and escort them to and from the classroom or show them around the school; but, their most important job is to welcome new students to the classroom, help them get acquainted with our school and introduce them to the other students and make them feel welcome to Milan Elementary. Chosen to serve as ambassadors this year are:
Cassidy Derico, Drenden Bowman, Morgan Hall, Gavin Trenkamp, Mya Sargent, Luke Melcher, Cooperlynn Lloyd, Zackery Hartman, Abigail Carpenter, Hunter Dickman, Naomi Holt, Austin Smith, Alaina Bennett, Logan Bruns, Grace Deffinger, Noah Morgan, Tryniti Reed, Ethan Clark, Riley Sullivan, Dillan Engel, Nevaeh Carpenter, Thomas Cobble, Natalee DeAtley, Cayden Green, Stacy Davidson, Garrett Cull, Emma Rohrig, Ethan Gerster, Izzy Gilday, Dalton Wuest, Ellie Knecht, Trevor Schebler, Rachel Holt, Ayden Potts, Riley Schwipps, Trent Langferman.
Thank you to these boys and girls for representing our school and making new students and visitors feel welcome!
Let's ALL Work Together to Keep Our Children Safe
Parents are reminded to not bring students to school too early in the mornings. Supervision begins at 7:45 am and students should not be dropped off before that time. Please use the drive at the bottom of the hill and drop students off in the chain-link fence area. Students will enter the building through the pool area doors of the building. Students arriving before 8:00 am should never be dropped off immediately in front of the school. This area is for buses only before 8:00 am.
Students arriving after 8:00 am should be accompanied into the building by an adult and signed in at the office.
When picking students up at the end of the day, keep in mind that car riders are dismissed at 2:45 pm so there is no need to be there much before 2:30 pm at the earliest.
For safety we have designated the parking lot area a “vehicle-only” area and closed to all pedestrian traffic during afternoon dismissal. Students will not be permitted to leave the loading zone area with a parent/adult on foot. All parents are reminded to stay in their vehicle, get in the pick-up line and follow it through to the designated pick-up area. (See the map below.) After you have stopped in the loading zone, your child will be released to get in your vehicle and you may proceed out of the parking lot.
Remember also that your child must have a note that she is being picked up after school or prior arrangements made with your child’s teacher before he will be permitted to go to the car pick-up area. Students who do not have a note or prior arrangements made will be sent to the bus. Please do not make last minute phone calls to school for this purpose, except in the case of a real emergency. Last minute changes in transportation plans create confusion for the students as well as the staff. Thanks for your help!
