From our Superintendent Dr. John Sparlin
Greetings Parents and Guardians,
As I continue visiting classrooms across the district, I am so impressed by our staff and students. They are engaging in collaborative learning practices, students are eager to participate and are practicing skills so valuable to them long-term. I observed 4th grade students at Grande Park this week using facts they had researched to defend their opinions on which sea creature would win a battle. The vocabulary they used, the way they presented themselves, and the way they respected differing opinions were all impressive. These AVID-based classroom activities are directly aligned to our climate for learning which aims to maintain student choice, and voice.
When we give opportunities for students to collect information, to formulate and verbalize their opinions, they are more engaged and invested in what they’re learning, and they’re training lifelong skills important in the future of all careers.
National School Psychology Week
The Special Education Department would like to express our appreciation to the SD 308 school psychologists during National School Psychology Week (November 7-11). This year's theme is “Unlock Potential. Find Your Password!” A password is a personal key for unlocking any number of areas of potential in students' lives. School psychologists are particularly skilled at assisting students and staff in unlocking the resources, proactive and preventive skills, and positive connections necessary to unlock one's full potential to thrive in school and life. We recognize the important role that school psychologists play in ensuring our students' potential is realized. Thanks for all you do!
Healthy Reminders
Cold and Flu Season is Here! We’re beginning to see an increase in absences due to illness. Now that people are spending less time outdoors, and more groups of people are together in confined spaces, germs are spreading! Please heighten your awareness of the importance of good hygiene practices, washing hands frequently, using a paper towel when contact with high-touch surfaces is necessary, use sanitizing wipes or spray to clean shared surfaces, encouraging students to use hand sanitizer and/or wash hands frequently, and have plenty of tissues available! The most important reminder is to STAY HOME if you are sick! By staying home when you don’t feel well, you help slow the spread of germs, and prevent others from missing school or work.
