January Update

Students are diving into summarizing nonfiction reading. They are using this graphic organizer to help them discover the central idea of an article and its key details.

Powerschool Grades

The semester has just started, and students' grades are constantly changing in ELA. Students are assessed then reassessed (then sometimes reassessed again). This Friday students will complete Check 2 of Central Idea. If your student received a poor grade on their Check 1 of Central Idea, they are working to gain proficiency (and bring their grade up). If they score higher, their previous grade will goes as "exempt." Please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns.

*As I tell my kids, NO STRESS about grades. We need to focus on if students are mastering concepts. ELA is a "slower" subject that takes significant effort. I wish I could just grade everything with a "right" and "wrong" check mark, unfortunately that does not help learners grow (and it would be pretty inaccurate). My students are constantly thinking, creating, and reflecting.

Straight Ace!

In ELA, we have been using a neat website called StraightAce. It's a supplementary eLearning program that helps them learn and practice ELA concepts from grades 3-8.

It has a kid-friendly interface, and so far kids seem to enjoy practicing ELA concepts. I sometimes will assign quick lessons, but students can also use the "self-study" curriculum. The "self-study" curriculum has a list of topics (I have 5th, 6th, and 7th grade open). Students can choose what they are interested in, and work on their skills (and earn "coins" and points).

The website is straightace.com. You child has their own school login and can login any time.

Thanks for reading!
