From the Middle EMS and ELA
News from the Principal, November 18, 2019
Hello Parents and Families,
Over the last week, administration and counselors took time to meet with each grade level group at EMS to talk about classroom behavior, work habits, and the culture of our academic environment.
We discussed some of our school wide expectations around no cell phones in academic environments (cell phones and headphones are allowed during lunch), wearing IDs at all times while on school grounds, and positive behavior expectations in our classrooms.
The class meetings were well received. A big shout out to a few of our EHS seniors and Coach Johnson who spoke with the 8th graders in particular. Their message for our 8th graders was very impactful. They reminded them that they have only a little bit of time left before high school, and during this time, students need to work on building good habits that will help them be successful in high school.
We also talked with both groups about ENGAGEMENT. Ask your student what he or she knows about what it means to be an engaged student. While we understand everyone can have a rough day and needs a break from time-to-time, being an engaged learner is the most important skill to develop in middle school and beyond.
Additionally, I recently met with a few classes to talk about behavior while a sub is in the class. What I shared with these classes is my expectation that we treat a substitute teacher like we would treat a guest in our home. Unfortunately, we have had some negative behavior in our classrooms, resulting in referrals to the office as well as lunch detentions and even some in-school suspensions. We want to avoid these consequences; however we have some work to do with students exhibiting more mature behavior in classes.
Administration and counselors will meet with ELA students next week for similar discussion.
Thank you for your support...as always, let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
