Our Class BOYS take the pledge!
A Note from Mrs. Loppnow:
Hello Parents!
Welcome to WINTER! I can't believe it is October 27 and we are watching the snow pile up. Do you think that is foreshadowing to the winter ahead?
We had quite a week in Third Grade! Keyboarding Camp, Unity Day, and a Class Paw Party...it has all been SO much fun! I hope your child is sharing all about our special events in the classroom, and I hope you enjoy seeing the updates here.
I want to extend a huge THANK YOU for attending conferences. It was so nice to talk with everyone. I love sharing the celebrations, but at the same time, I know some conversations can be difficult when we are talking about growth areas. I appreciate your time and honesty. It is so helpful when we are all united as one big team for your child!
I also take your concerns to heart and use it as an opportunity to improve my own teaching and communication. Directly from a parent question, I have added a new section to my newsletter titled "Math Spotlight Strategy". I hope these weekly notes will help you when working on math at home!
Thank you for all you do!
Enjoy your weekend!

A Peek into this week and next!
Writer's Workshop: This week's Paragraph of the Week was all about Something We Are Scared of! Just in time for Halloween, students thought about things that SCARE them! Clowns, haunted houses, scary movies, things that POP out, and...DOLLS were all common themes.
Content: Continuing on with our Keyboarding Lessons, the students have now learned the position of all of the letters on the keyboard. I am SHOCKED at how quickly they pick up the idea of using the homerow to type! It's incredible to see 8 year olds shift from the "hunt and peck" method, to actually KNOWING where the keys are based on their finger position! I really encourage you to allow opportunities for your child to continue his/her typing practice at home. There are several game options on the Red Rock Student Resources page. In addition, just typing on a plain ol' Google doc can be a lot of fun! Maybe it is their 10 minute writing for the day or a way to study spelling words. Or, it could be a nice letter typed and shared with a teacher! ENJOY!
Reader's Workshop: This week we began our next benchmark unit focused on LITERAL vs FIGURATIVE language. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TC0uZbODRWU It is a fun unit to explore the creative language of different authors. Understanding this language helps us figure out the author's tone when writing the story. The figurative language we will be focusing on includes: hyperbole, personification, similes, and metaphors. Using our read aloud, The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate, we are finding a GAZILLION (hyperbole) examples of figurative language!
