April 2022
Letter from Mrs. Engstrom
Dear Kasuun Families,
It's nearing the end of the school year. It's hard to believe there are just 7 weeks left!
It is springtime in Alaska and as the days get longer, it is so easy to lose track of time and adequate sleep can become a challenge for all of us. Keeping a routined schedule helps to ensure that students are in the best mindset for learning. Alaskan springtime also means we can have sunshine and break up on one day and snow the next day. Sending your child to school with appropriate outdoor gear as we move through this time of year while enable them to make the most of their recess time.
As many of you may know, AK STAR Testing is on pause for now. Due to glitches beyond our control, testing is on hold throughout the district. Alaska Science Tests are still occurring with grades 5, 8, and 10. I will communicate any update as I receive it.
Regardless of the pause, classroom learning continues! It is a joy to see students so engaged in their learning. Glow Day in Kindergarten provided a fun math lesson with black lights and bright counting. First Grade is full of emerging readers! Second grade has had one of our SROs, Officer Mitchell, visit and read to them. Thanks go out to the adult helpers who came to help Third grade with their planting. The Fourth graders created and presented interesting science projects. I hope you had a chance to experience the Fifth grade Wax Museum. It was inspiring to see their portrayals of Civil Rights' Activists. The Sixth graders are choosing their electives for middle school and the Band and Orchestra students continue to hone their musical talent.
I would like to invite you to the Kasuun Hootenanny on April 26 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. It is a free family event that includes dancing, singing, and a silent auction. Ms. Dodge has been teaching our students the songs and dances. The silent auction will directly benefit the music program. Donations for the silent auction are coming in and I am looking forward to some competitive bidding. If you are interested in donating an item, please give the office a call.
Our Student Council activity is starting to pick up as well. Student Council members have been helping present Morning Announcements to our student body each morning. The School Store has been open only twice so far and has been a huge success. In addition to it being an opportunity for our students, it has also been teaching important real-life lessons in budgeting and planning. Student Council also chooses Spirit Days and they have planned them for each Friday through the end of the school year.

4/15: Wear Your Parent's Clothes Day
