Palmer High School August
Principal's Post
Welcome Back!
The good turnout made for a smooth first day of school, and to my amazement when the first-hour bell rang on Thursday morning, the hallways were clear and the 2018-19 school year was officially in session. Even the guidance office was empty! This smooth start is a testament of the guidance and front office staff that make Palme such a welcoming and positive environment for students and stakeholders. Their experience and dedication to Palmer High School are beyond commendable.
Visiting classrooms and checking in with teachers I found a common thread of what was felt amongst staff; it's been a great start. A great deal of the teachers and support staff that make up Palmer High School are veterans to Palmer High. However, we do have some wonderful new additions to the teaching staff this year. Together, the veterans of the school and the new staff make up what I believe is the best teaching staff in the great state of Alaska.
Out of all the comprehensive high schools in the district, we offer the widest variety of great programs. We offer more career and technical education (CTE) classes, and our IB program is a gold standard of high academics. As a parent or guardian, I encourage you to talk to your student and explore what Palmer High School has to offer that will enhance and develop your student as a life-long learner.
Out with the Old, in with the New
What is IB?
International Baccalaureate is considered a gold standard academic program for secondary education around the world. If you are not familiar with the program, let me give you five and a half million reasons why you should become familiar with the program. Palmer High School students earned $5,457, 000 in scholarship offerings last school year, much of which were our IB students. Come and learn more at an information meeting here at Palmer High on Tuesday, August 28th for 9th and 10th graders and on August 30th for 11th and 12th. The meeting will be in the theater at 6 pm. You can also learn more at the PHS website under the IB link. https://www.matsuk12.us/phs

Climate and School Culture
When it comes to school safety, there is nothing more paramount to the health and wellness of school than its climate and culture. As Principal I devote a great deal of focus on our climate and culture. My vision for PHS and its staff is to foster a culture of caring and one that believes in every student and their ability to learn and be successful.
I believe that every stakeholder in Palmer High has a voice and I welcome feedback as to how we can continue to cultivate our positive, student-centered campus. Every parent/guardian, student, and stakeholder can report any and all safety and wellness reports with a convenient MSBSD app that includes a tip line.
How do I get the Tipline? Option 1: https://www.matsuk12.us/matsu for details and links to the app.
Option 2: Go the Apple app store or Android app store and download the MSBSD app for free. The app will allow access to a 24-hour tipline notification.
