Principal's Message

Dear Chehalem Families,

I can't believe there are only 2 weeks left. With COVID this has seemed like the longest year ever, yet the end of the year has been speeding by. I know teachers have a lot of fun and educational activities planned up until the end on June 18th.


We need to collect all iPads, Chromebooks, hot spots and chargers from students unless they are participating in Camp Achieve or other district summer programs. Students attending in hybrid should bring their devices and chargers on the last day of school and will leave them with their teacher. If hybrid students forget their devices, or if a student is in CDL they may bring their devices and chargers to school any time between 8-4:00 from June 18-25th. There will also be a one time pick-up service at Heather Place and Belleau Woods apartments on Monday, June 21st from 11-12. Look for members from the outreach team to be there to collect items. Library books may also be returned during these times.


Thrive After School program registration opens June 1 for families currently enrolled in THPRD's out-of-school program or previous THRIVE families. Space is limited so register early. There will be a lottery for spaces for these families from June 1-7. THRIVE Registration opens to newcomers starting June 21. Click on this link for more information.


The deadline for Camp Achieve has closed. We had more students apply than there are available slots, but hopefully many of our interested families will get in. You should get confirmation in the next couple of weeks if your child was accepted to the program.I will continue to send summer program information offered at schools as I receive it.


We have one more spirit day on June 11th (Beach Day) and the last day of school is June 18th.


Thank you for notifying the office if your child has any of the primary symptoms of COVID (listed in the photo above). Our office or health staff would reach out to gather additional information and give you guidance. It takes the efforts of the community to keep everyone safe. Primary symptoms listed above.

Information for Elementary Grading & Reporting in CDL

Dear BSD Families,


We want to thank you for the work that you’re doing each and every day to support your child’s learning. We appreciate you taking on your role as an instructional guide. We couldn’t do this without your partnership.


This year’s elementary progress report looks a little different. Assessing a child’s knowledge, skills and understanding in Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL) is a challenge, and the assessment tools and assignments we normally use as evidence for progress may not accurately represent how your child is doing this year. Teachers provide feedback to daily work and assess along the way, but we acknowledge that children are still missing the multitude of opportunities to show what they know like they would with in-person instruction; therefore, it’s not equitable to provide a summary judgment.


This year, we’re suspending the practice of assigning proficiency to end-of-year learning targets. The progress report won’t show 1-4 proficiency marks. Instead, each section will indicate which targets have been taught during the semester, and another mark will reflect the student’s learning progress according to the evidence gathered during CDL. The Behavior, Language and Speaking & Listening sections won’t be assessed and will be grayed out.


The revised progress report is a reflection of how we continue to use our equity policy as a guide in our decision-making. And while we are pausing the traditional way in which we assess elementary students, we will return to proficiency-based grading at the elementary level when we move back into full in-person instruction.

Book Bus Update

Hi,

Wednesday, May 26th was the last book bus and curbside checkout. We will have one additional bus on June 9th to pick-up books.


This coming week (Tuesday, June 1st-Friday, June 4th) will be the last Hybrid class checkouts. K/1 who would normally checkout on Monday, will checkout that Wednesday, June 2nd since it's a synchronous day now to replace Memorial Day.


Then all books will be due the following Friday, June 11th. The following week will be used to continue to ask online/hybrid students to return library books.
