A Quote from Tom Loud
If you stop teaching after the standardized test, then you completely validate the notion, the test is all that matters
The Plan for the Last Days of School
We all understand that we are teaching adolescents that may need more frequent brain breaks this time of the year, but, please understand we are still teaching. Some of the skills you might focus on for the end of the school year are
- summer reading ideas
- share with students the many summer opportunities offered in the county and surrounding areas and have them make a summer wishlist to share with their parents.
- help them write letters or emails to various organizations that might use a few extra volunteers
- provide sustained silent reading time
- have them analyze the lyrics of their favorite summertime song (clean of course)
- have students find positive quotes and create an artistic representation of the quote- we'll post on bulletin boards for the last days
- have students write a letter to their future selves on fun stationery and we'll mail it to them at Winter Break.
- Get creative
In Short
Students already have plenty of fun stuff built in.
With field day, field trips, awards, and performances already built in to our last days, the remaining time will be instructional. Students should not be working unsupervised in the hallways. Do not send them to other rooms or the library without an adult. Do not relax your expectations for using the restroom, preparedness for class, or common area expectations.
Attendance for our teachers is critically important this last week of school. Consistency helps us all remain calm and focussed. I thank you ahead of time for knowing your presence strengthens your team.
I Want To Be Like You
Thank you, teacher,
for being my life's role model.
When I consider all you've taught me
and reflect on the kind of person you are,
I want to be like you—
smart, interesting and engaging,
positive, confident, yet unpretentious.
I want to be like you—
well-informed and easy to understand,
thinking with your heart as well as your head,
gently nudging us to do our best,
with sensitivity and insight.
I want to be like you—
giving your time, energy and talent
to ensure the brightest possible future
for each of us.
Thank you, teacher
For giving me a goal to shoot for:
I want to be like you!
