For the 2019-20 school year we are offering 5 distinct Personalized Professional Development Pathways. Each teacher will select one pathway. Pathway selections are due to Educational Services by September 20, 2019.
In addition to selecting one pathway for the year, teachers will also attend district-wide professional development focused on:
iReady Math
Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)
District “First” Fridays
Site “First Fridays
For more details and to select your pathway, visit our PD Brochure here.
iReady Math
This year we are piloting the iReady Math resources. Based on teacher feedback, we have reserved the August 23 site “First” Friday to be an open Friday for teachers to explore their iReady materials. iReady trainings for all teachers will take place on 8/26-8/28 and 11/5-11/7. Visit our PD brochure and talk to your principal for more details.
Digital Programs ~ Overview Guide for Parents
Digital Curriculum Information and Assistance
We are working hard to have our EUSD digital programs ready for the new school year. Please have patience the first week of school while apps load in when students first turn them on. Here are some additional notes regarding our programs. Note: Usernames and passwords for students are the same as the two previous years. Here is a helpful teacher UN and PW sheet. For digital programs use Clever for specified apps. http://clever.com/in/encinitas
IXL has NOW joined CLEVER and can be accessed there just like ST Math and iReady.
NatGeo is NOT CLEVER, teachers will need to add new students arriving 8/16 to their class.
Imagine Learning - students may have to touch "open in app" - Kinders can ask for STAR Techs
AR, Spelling City, Raz Kids, and a few other programs are not EUSD provided programs. Please check with your Office Manager at your school site to locate who can assist you with any issues.
Literably Assessment: We will continue with Literably as our district-wide ELA/ELD common assessment. Every student (with the exception of Kindergarten) will engage with Literably as one of our beginning of the year assessments. If you need any assistance with implementation please contact your site TOSA or Karla or Glen for support.
iReady is a CLEVER accessed program. Please note: please do not plan to give any iReady assessments until all teachers have attended the iReady required PD.
Also, iREADY has free webinars for admins and teachers on the new i-Ready updates for back to school! You can register for one of these sessions at the following link: https://register.gotowebinar.com/rt/2913278503236959491

iPads - What to Expect the First Week
As always, iPads will roll out as soon as possible. When students first turn on the iPads, app UPDATES will need time to process (could take 24 to 48 hours). As you know updates occur all the time and they just need to allow them to update while iPads are turned on.
Please remember changes made to rosters or (new students added) take 24 HOURS to process into the digital programs. And last.... please have patience as all 5400+ iPads get online and load in programs. Naturally, there will be small issues along the way please plan accordingly. We will work as quickly as possible to get things rolling.
Digital Citizenship Requirement for ALL Students
Welcome Back! There is nothing like the start of a fresh school year. It is so exciting to anticipate our new students and the learning journey that awaits! One very important part of that journey is the Digital Citizenship, Legal and Ethical Use Lessons found in Power School.
Digital Citizenship and Digital Safety are essential for our students, and they all need to have their grade-level appropriate lesson and take the assessment prior to the iPads going home. After the students have understood the grade-level specific lesson, then they will all take the grade-level specific assessment to show that they understand their responsibilities as a digital citizen.
Your grade-level specific lesson can be found at this link within PowerSchool:

Your NEW PowerSchool Class
You will find your NEW PS class with current students and last years class by clicking “My Classes”, select “Jump to Inactive Classes”. It should show you “School Year: 08-19-2019.”
Make sure to make your 19/20 class active by clicking on "Manage Class" and choose "Make Active".
If you created content in your PowerSchool class last year that you plan to use this year, follow the quick steps below to change the name and make it easy to find. You can then copy 18/19 pages or content blocks into your current 19/20 class:
- Go to your class (Grade – Name – All Day; unless you renamed it)
- Manage Class (right side)
- Class Setting (in the dropdown)
- Add “2018-2019” in front of your class name for LAST years class (Ex. 2018-2019 2nd- Tarquin- All Day)
- (If last years class is not showing, go to "Jump to Inactive" and then School Year: All")

REMINDER: Paper and Printing Issue and Challenges at EUSD
Paper and Printing Issue and Challenges at EUSD
The 51-foot semi-truck delivering paper to the District this morning, in preparation of the new school year, is a stark reminder of the enormous impact that our paper usage has on the environment and our District's carbon footprint. Staff was shocked to learn that "34.62 Million Sheets of Paper" were used last year. It also doesn't help that our paper suppliers have increased the cost of paper by 7%. School pallet orders DOUBLED last year. Now comes the question, what can we do? We're working hard to provide alternatives and better tools, but the culture shift needs to come from everyone involved. The supply budget is at the mercy of the needs of all teachers and staff, and we will continue to provide everything that you need, but please take the time ask yourself every time that you click "print", is it absolutely necessary for you to print 'that'?
Current EUSD Paper Use IMPACT:
- 34.62 Million Sheets of Paper Ordered by the District from 2015 to June.
- Trees: The equivalent of 4,155 Trees.
- Carbon: 439,674,000 Metric Tons of CO2 Generated in the manufacturing of the paper.
- Energy: 1,661,760,000 Hours (189,698 Years) running a 60W light bulb equivalent in the manufacturing of the paper.
Learning Treasures
Did you know that myOn has a library of books that all of your students can read at the same time? It is a terrific resource for student interested in reading, research, and mini-book clubs. Each book listed in myOn is a class set. In fact, each book could be a school wide-set, that every student could read at the same time.
Check out the Library section of myOn and use the “search” option of any topics of interest (e.g. environment, coding, horses, cooking, etc…). Or you can use the “browse” option for specific genres, themes, and content areas (e.g. Animals, Language Arts, Social Studies, About Me, etc…)
Take a look at the options and the number of e-books just waiting to be enjoyed by your students under the browse section alone. Additionally, think of the possibilities of the “About Me” books in advancing social-emotional learning for your students!
STAR Technologist – Reboot
This year we are very excited about the reboot of the STAR Technologist Teams (STAR Tech for short). Currently, we have STAR Leaders at every school and over 265 students district-wide that have asked to be in the program. If you would like to see who are the STAR Leaders, STAR Technologists, and the Teacher Advisors at each school just click through the online slide presentation until you find your school name and see the two slides with your site’s information. LINK TO STAR SLIDES (If your school does not have a teacher advisor, please consider jumping on board, we could use your support! )
Here is a picture of the STAR Leaders from each EUSD school for their leadership training at the Board Room on August 8th 2019. These students are amazing!

We will share available resources, how to sign-up, and transportation options. Our hope is you will all bring your students to Farm Lab at least one additional time this year for a design and/or research project. Open House date is TBD!

Updates Regarding Our Enrichment and ASPIRE Programs
ASPIRE
Check out our new look! This summer, the second round of facility upgrades took place in ASPIRE classrooms. When students return to ASPIRE this school year, they will be welcomed back with multiple different seating options in a variety of vibrant colors and styles. Click here for more details.
Due to the high volume of ASPIRE enrollments at the beginning of the school year, all registrations submitted after 8/13/19 are not eligible to begin ASPIRE until 8/26/19, which is the second week of school. Click here for more details.
After School Enrichment Classes
Each year we add to our selection of after school enrichment classes to ensure we are offering a wide variety of options for all students. This year, we are pleased to bring back many of the favorites, with some new opportunities added to the mix including Drama Kids, Helen Woodward Animal Center, Gizmos and Gadgets Science Lab, Little Rookies Baseball & Softball Clinics, My Music Workshop (music and instrument exploration for grades K-3), and Wilmurt Music Academy (choir). We also offer Concert Band experiences for grades 4th-6th. More information regarding after school enrichment classes can be found HERE.
EL Summer Academy
Over the past several years, EUSD has sponsored a summer school academy for any English learner wishing to attend. This year we had 120 English learners attend from grades 1-6. Students spent the academy learning and reflecting on the essential question, “How can we take care of the environment?” Through this high-interest theme, students were supported with tools and strategies to read complex informational texts using texture features (title, headings, photographs). Besides having awesome teachers, and wonderful learning experiences, a bike give away at the end of the summer academy encouraged students to attend daily! This was donated by General Manager of Eco Forest, Roger Blaas, in an effort to also promote physical fitness, and environmental stewardship. Our English learner Summer Academy not only built the speaking, reading and writing skills of our students, it also enhanced the confidence and positive self-concept of all who attended. Thank you to all whose hard work and support make this opportunity possible! Click here to learn additional details.
