Principal's Message
Dear Memorial Families,
Spaulding Foundation is one of MMES' biggest supporters! They are planning for their big "Night of Stars" fundraiser, and information can be found near the bottom of this newsletter. Check it out and help them support MERSD!
Thank you to all of the parents and staff who helped make "Harvest Week" such a success. I was amazed to see all of the produce that our new gardens yielded this season! The snacks that were served were a huge hit with all of the kids. Who knew that potatoes, beets, and carrots could be so exciting!?!? It really is amazing how engaged children are when they see the "fruits of their labor" served in the cafeteria. The best part was that we were able to donate our surplus to the "Open Door" Food Pantry!
A special "thank you" goes out to Mrs. Morgese and Mrs. Tomaiolo for all of their work on the project. Well done!
Enjoy the weekend!
John

Harvest Day at Memorial School
This Tuesday, September 27th, Memorial School will hold its first Harvest Day! For the past few years, teachers and parents have been collaborating on how best to build and utilize our outdoor gardens. With the help of "Backyard Growers," students, teachers, and parents worked together to plant, cultivate, and water our gardens this. Memorial families signed up and volunteered to water the gardens throughout the summer. Without that kind of community support, we would not be able to come together and celebrate our harvest this coming week! In spite of the drought, we have much to harvest. Gardens will be harvested on Tuesday and then food will be prepared by parents and kitchen staff Wednesday. This will all culminate with a “Tasting Day” on Thursday during students lunch periods!
Bus Info
(from: http://www.mersd.org/site/Default.aspx?PageID=356)
Can Registered Students Ride Any Bus?
No. Students will only be allowed to ride the school bus to which they are assigned. Transportation is intended for travel to and from a student’s home, not other locations. With the understanding that some students consistently travel to and from multiple addresses and homes, students will be permitted to travel to more than one address if it is on a recurring, predictable schedule. It is our hope that this will be helpful to families, while still allowing MERSD to have advanced knowledge of which students will be on a given bus. This advanced knowledge is important for planning demand vs. capacity and for safety reasons so we know where students should be each day. Requests to ride more than one bus should be provided to: schoolbus@mersd.org. Please be aware that travel to destinations that are less than 1.5 miles from school will be subject to the $180 annual per student fee. Students will not be allowed to travel home on a friend’s school bus.
For more information, please email: schoolbus@mersd.org

Note for "Walkers"
If your child typically walks or bikes to school and used the footbridge in the past, you will notice that the footbridge is closed currently. A truck hit it during the summer and the district is working with insurance companies to get it repaired. In the meantime, students who used the footbridge in the past, should walk or ride to our new crosswalk in front of the school. They can push the button to signal the lights so that they can cross the street safely and then walk up the new island sidewalk to the front of the building. There is a beautiful new bike rack located in front of the school for their use. Please review this with your child if it impacts him/her.

From MERHS...
MERHS loves spirit at Friday evening football games. Games are a wonderful place for the community to come together. We would like to remind parents that there is not specific supervision of children during the game. We request that parents attend evening games with their children. We want to make sure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable evening. Go Hornets!
Thank you!!!
