Plano Independent School District School Health TAKING UNUSED MEDICATION HOME
The Plano ISD guidelines for taking unused medication home are as follows:
1. It is suggested that parents keep expiration dates for prescription and over the counter medications documented. The parent is ultimately responsible for replacing all medications prior to their expiration.
2. As an added benefit to the parents of Plano ISD students, the school nurse or designated staff will make every attempt to notify the parent and/or guardian two or more weeks prior to the expiration date for prescription medications. The parent and/or guardian will be given two weeks from the date of notification to pickup medications from the school clinic. Medications that have not been picked up from the school clinic before the end of the school year will be destroyed. In the case of summer school the above will apply and the last day to pick-up medications will be the last day of summer school. The school nurse and principal will work in collaboration on this issue.
3. All over -the- counter ( OTC) medications that have not been picked up from the school clinic before school lets out for summer break will be destroyed without notification per PISD policy ( not nurse Laura's policy!) Please pick up your child's medication on or before May 24 the last day of school. If you absolutely cannot come to the school campus to pick up the medication by May 24, please call 469-752-2309 to arrange a time to pick up your child's medication. Unused medication will not be sent home with a student Please call me if you have any questions regarding this policy. It has been a pleasure to provide health care to your child this school year. Thank you for allowing me this privilege of caring for your student. I hope your summer is safe and healthy. See the March edition of this newsletter for ideas to do with you child over the summer. Emergency Medications
All campuses have an emergency supply of epinephrine and diphenhydramine HCL (Benadryl) that school nurses may administer in the event of an unexpected, undiagnosed anaphylactic (severe allergic) reaction. Parents of children with known anaphylaxis are expected to provide an individual supply of emergency medication and emergency action plan to the campus nurse. Please use the link below to obtain action plans and medication forms that are necessary for us to properly care for your child at school.
In addition to emergency medications, those students who have asthma, diabetes or other medical needs will need to fill out a new action plan for the 2019/2020 school year. You can contact me or look on line via the link below for the forms.
Please have a safe and healthy summer!
