Estrada's E-Notes
February 2022 Edition
Principal's Post
Let's try this again...
We are excited to welcome you back to flag decks where we gather as a school community to celebrate our students and share important information. For everyone's safety, we ask that you follow these guidelines:
- Enter campus through the VIP (Very Important Parent) Gate. This is the boardwalk gate closest to the library. The gate will open at 8:05.
- Enjoy flag deck from the VIP section of the quad. This is the area to the right side of the stage, behind where the primary grade students are seated. This will allow for some social distancing between students, staff and parents.
- If you attend to see your child receive an award, they will be directed to go the VIP area so that you can take their picture.
- Masks are recommended but not required for outdoor events per the CDPH.
- Exit campus through the VIP Gate immediately after flag deck.
I look forward to seeing you at flag deck on February 4th!
Keep being awesome!

Thriving Together
This month's focus is perseverance. Dr Borba says,
Thrives finish what they start and don't need gold stars. Children strong in perseverance exhibit fortitude, tenacity, and the resolve to endure, so as to bounce back from failure, increase resolve to endure, and develop personal agency.
Top Takeaways:
- Perseverance is a super power. The ability to stick to a task and a long-term goal is the greatest predictor of success and stronger than I Q, academic achievement, SAT scores, extra-curricular activities and test scores.
- 3 abilities nurture perseverance: Growth Mindset, Goal-Setting, and Learning from Failure.
- Add "yet". When you hear "can't, never, won't" comments, respond with a growth mindset phrase that helps your child know that with effort, he/she will improve.
Strategy to Try:
Teach and model goal-setting using this formula: I will + what + when + how.
What = what do you want to accomplish
When = a realistic and achievable timeframe
How = action steps needed to reach the goal
February Read Aloud
This month I am reading The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires. In the story a girl has a wonderful idea. She is going to make the most MAGNIFICENT thing! She knows just how it will look. She knows just how it will work. All she has to do is make it, and she makes things all the time. Easy-peasy!? But making her magnificent thing is anything but easy, and the girl tries and fails, repeatedly. Eventually, the girl gets really, really mad. She is so mad, in fact, that she quits. But after her dog convinces her to take a walk, she comes back to her project with renewed enthusiasm and manages to get it just right. The story has a message about perseverance which is our Thrivers character strength of the month.

Volunteers on Campus
NEW: Starting January 31st, verification of vaccination is not required to be an approved volunteer. Instead, you will need to show proof of a negative covid test dated within 3 days.
All interested volunteers are asked to complete these 3 steps:
- Read through the Newport El Volunteer Orientation slide deck.
- Complete the Newport El Volunteer Agreement.
- Complete the district's volunteer approval process.
As always, every teacher utilizes volunteers in different ways. Teachers will be communicating with the approved volunteers from their class about their need for volunteers and scheduling.
