Bite Size Behavior Tips from our Behavior Interventionist, Tracy Klare
Helping Your Child Become a Problem Solver
As parents, we always want to be the ones to help our children be successful, happy, and well adjusted. However, sometimes we can hinder our child's problem solving skills when trying to be a "good parent". All children need the skill of being a good problem solver in order to be a productive member of society. Here are some steps to help your child solve his or her own problem when applicable.
1.Provide a sincere dose of empathy. It sounds like this... That does sound like a problem. I bet that is really upsetting.
2. Hand the problem back to your child. It sounds like this...What do you think you could do to solve this problem? Don't be surprised if your child mumbles, I don't know.
3.Share what other "kids" have tried. It sounds like this...Would you like to hear what other kids have tried?
4. Provide two or three ways to solve the problem. It sounds like this...Some kids have decided to ___________, ___________, or ________. Would one of those work for you?
5. Allow your child to solve or not solve the problem. It sounds like this...I hope this helps. Let me know how this turns out.
Remember....resist the urge to solve the problem for them...just lend a guiding hand.
