SIOP Tip of the Week
How can we provide opportunities for interaction in our classrooms?
- Offer frequent opportunities for interactions about
lesson concepts which encourage higher level thinking
skills.
- Use a variety of grouping configurations; Cooperative
groups, buddies, pairs, large and small groups.
- Have ample wait time for responses.
- Provide opportunities for clarification in native
language, when advantageous.
What the Research Says....
- Interaction is the basis for processing language and
- Content classes do not always provide opportunities
to practice speaking, and ELs may be particularly
hesitant to speak up before they have amassed
sufficient oral proficiency and confidence to interact
with more fluent peers” (Dept of Ed, 2012).
- “interaction in itself is not necessarily helpful;
activities must be carefully structured, and non‐ELs
must participate in certain ways, in order for such
interaction to be successful” (Dept of Ed, 2012).
