GES continues our focus on demonstrating Kind Words and Actions. Part of showing kindness is responding to others in need. When we see someone needs help, we look for ways to do this. Many of you may have heard about the recent flooding in Kentucky. Two Letcher County schools had their school libraries destroyed by flood waters. GES is responding to this community in need by collecting gently used books. Books will be boxed and shipped to the schools in need. Books will be collected at GES from September 6-September 16. Your child can drop off the book donations at the designated tables in the GES lobby. Thank you for helping us help the Letcher County schools rebuild their libraries.
Unity Tickets
Next week is a busy week here at GES. Our Unity Expectation Focus next week is “I will Follow Staff Directions the First Time Given”. Students will be given salmon colored “I” unity tickets throughout the week. Please talk with your child about how they can lead by example in their classroom, at lunch/recess, in the hallways and on the bus!
On Monday, we will be recognizing Patriot Day. All students and staff are encouraged to wear red, white and blue or wear their scouting uniform to school. Our GES scouts will be invited to participate in a live edition of our morning announcements. If your child is in scouts, please remind them to listen for the announcement from me in the morning with directions on what to do.
On Tuesday, we have picture day. Dress to impress with a big smile. We will also be introducing Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month to our students. This is a difficult concept for young children to understand. We will be using words that are age appropriate to help students understand how to be a good friend if one of their friends is sick. I will be reading the author’s notes from the children’s book How do you Care for a Very Sick Bear. Author Vanessa Bayer, is a childhood cancer survivor. She shares how important her friends were when she was very sick. As noted in the book “My advice is simple: The way that you care for a very sick bear or anyone really, is to be there for them”. During our morning announcements on Wednesday, we will read the book to the students. To listen to the book in advance go to: https://youtu.be/WgfCIqWl_oE
On Friday, we will be doing Constitution Day Activities and celebrating the districtwide Gold Out for Pediatric Cancer Awareness. All staff and students are encouraged to wear gold on Friday. This is also the final day of our book drive. Thank you for your generous donations so far. We will have a wonderful donation to send to Kentucky.
Week of 9/12-I will follow directions the first time given
Week of 9/18-Take ownership of our actions and learning
Week of 9/26-Yield and walk silently throughout our school
Thank you for supporting our efforts to develop a kind, safe, and welcoming school. You are an important part of our GES Community and we appreciate you!
