Garden City Library Update
March 2018
We Have a Winner! Part 1
The American Library Association awards the Caldecott Medal to the artist of "the most distinguished American picture book for children." This year, BY ONE VOTE, first- and second-graders chose a title for the Oak Lawn Mock Caldecott by the same illustrator that won an official ALA honor a few years ago: Peter Brown, for his pictures for Creepy Pair of Underwear.
Voting was so close, I think we need to have two Honor books: Bob, Not Bob!, written by Liz Garton Scanlon and Audrey Vernick and illustrated by Matthew Cordell; and Splat! written and illustrated by John Burgerman.
We Have a Winner! Part 2
The annual Rhode Island Children’s Book Award (RICBA) goes to the book selected by students in grades 3-5 as their favorite from a list of 20 nominees.
Students who read 3 or more nominated books may vote. This year, we had 84 qualified voters (a record!), and their choice was The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. The statewide winner, however, was Wish by Barbara O'Connor.
There's still time for kids to read more nominees to participate in our inaugural Rooster Games, which will feature multiple rounds of gameshow-style activities. It will take place at the Central Branch of the Cranston Public Library on Wednesday, April 11, from 6:00-7:30 p.m.
What We're Covering
I'm working on getting all of my lessons and resources online via the LibGuide platform. I also post photos of students and their work on our blog. Here's what we're currently learning about:
