Noticias para la familia de Miller

Hello Miller Maverick Families,
The school year is surely moving along. We have completed our first nine weeks of school as well as two weeks of our second nine weeks grading period. We are at that time in the school year when we must reflect on what we are doing as a campus and make needed adjustments to accomplish our goals. One of our main goals is closing the student achievement gap from the learning loss created by the pandemic. I ask that you take time to review with your child their report card, have conversations about progress and setting goals for the second nine week grading cycle. Our mavericks have a lot of growth to attain this year academically and our teachers are working arduously to ensure they achieve our growth targets by the end of the school year. Accelerated instruction will be provided for many of our students in the form of Saturday school scheduled to begin on October 30th. If you received a text message from the school or your child brought home a letter of invitation, please complete and return as soon as possible. The following are a few reminders as we proceed with the school year.
- Be sure your child attends regularly and on time.
- Check your child’s planner daily. Students are required to write daily lesson objectives, assignments and homework in their planner. The planner is also used to communicate information between teacher and home.
- Communicate with your child’s teacher any academic concerns. Request a parent/teacher conference if needed.
- Students are required to be in uniform shirt and pant every day as well as uniform sweaters/jackets if worn. Students may wear a college shirt with uniform pant on Wednesdays and a Miller spirit shirt with jeans on Fridays.
I continue to encourage every parent and guardian to be involved. Research shows that the more parents are involved in their student’s education the better they perform in school. There will be family engagement events and activities in which you can participate as well as opportunities to volunteer your time.
Parents, we greatly appreciate all your support for a successful 2021-2022 school year and encourage your continued partnership with Miller Intermediate. Working together we can surely achieve much success for our Miller Mavericks. Thank you.

Gracias.

Your Miller Counselors, Ms. Trimmingham (5th) and Mr. Sumpter (6th), are ecstatic to have the opportunity to work with your children here at Miller Intermediate School. We have had a number of happenings at Miller during this first semester and we would like to take the opportunity to share some of them with you.
Miller Mavericks have Character! Each month, Miller Intermediate will focus on developing a different character trait. For the month of October, the focus was RESPECT. In November we will be spotlighting EMPATHY. Throughout the month, students will be provided with challenges, activities, and a number of conversations/scenarios to discuss how to develop and show empathy to others. While we prepare to move into November, please begin looking through your closets to find appropriate attire in various shades of blue in order to spotlight your dedication to showing EMPATHY. More announcements to come.
Drug Free Looks Like Me! During the last week of October, Miller Intermediate have been showcasing their dedication to remaining Drug Free by participating in our daily dress challenges. Students were allowed to participate in a number of themes, such as “Rebel in Red Against Drugs”, “Defend Against Drugs”, “Drugs Can’t Find Me”, “Stay Drug Free & Healthy”, and “Team Up Against Drugs”. Students also had the opportunity to participate in the Red Ribbon Photo Challenge, the Drug Free Slogan Challenge, and the Teammate Essay Challenge. Winners were announced throughout the week and students and staff were recognized for their participation in each challenge.
Honor Roll: On Friday, October 29th, students who earned Honor Roll status during the 1st marking period were recognized by their peers, parents, and loved ones. Students were presented with an Honor Roll certificate for their success in earning A’s with 2 B’s, A’s with 1 B, and All A’s. Please continue to celebrate and encourage your students to put forth their best effort in every content area as well as their behavior. Students who were also successful in earning grades at or above a C, in all content areas and have E’s or S’s in conduct for each content, will be celebrated at one of our fun-filled “WOW” parties. Our first “WOW” party will take place on November 5th, 2021.
Getting to the “Real Deal” with Kids: Many times, after school, we greet our kid with a hug and a smile and we ask, “How was your day?” or “Did you have a good day?” The response commonly given is “Good.” The way we ask children questions, determines how they will answer. To help develop more meaningful and informative conversations, practice asking open ended questions which require more than a yes or no response. Here are a some examples:
- Tell me some exciting/not so exciting details about your day.
- Tell me about something you learned or practiced in class this week.
- Tell me something you learned about a friend this week.
- What was the best thing that happened at school today/this week? Why was that great for you?
- What do you and your friends like to do during wellness time?
- Tell me about anything that happened recently that you think you need some advice about...no judgement..
Healthy and strong communication is pertinent to any relationship and should be continuously developed and nurtured. We encourage you to continue open-judgement free conversations to build trust and understanding effectively.

Hello Miller Mavericks!! We are riding high learning SO much in math this year. 5th grade is working hard multiplying and dividing fractions, while 6th grade is heading into the land of rates and ratios. It is an exciting time of year with great things happening here at Miller. If you are looking for ways your child can continue their growth at home in math, iReady is a great program they can access through the Alief HUB for added assistance and practice. It has helped many of our students make amazing jumps with regular participation and instruction.

Did you know that October is Dyslexia Awareness Month?
What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a learning disability in reading. Having dyslexia does not mean your child is “dumb,” slow, or anything like that. First and foremost, having dyslexia does not affect your intelligence. On the contrary, studies have shown that students with dyslexia have an average to an above average intelligence. At Miller Intermediate, Mr. Rodriguez facilitates learning by teaching students' with dyslexia different approaches and strategies that can help them improve their reading skills and manage other academic challenges. Many times, dyslexia can also create difficulties in other academic skills for example, Reading Comprehension, Spelling, Writing and Math. However, with proper intervention, all these difficulties can improve.
Please contact Mr. V. Rodriguez for any questions you may have about dyslexia and other academic difficulties that your child might be experiencing.
