The Knightly News

Parent Newsletter - August 2023

Principal's Message

Hello Knight Families,

We are excited to welcome our new Knights to The Castle on Wednesday, August 23 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. for new student orientation. As a reminder, the first day of school is Monday, August 28. This year’s SCA theme is Breakthrough to Excellence. At Kellam High School, we boast the highest graduation rate in the city for the past 7 years. Additionally, we lead the district in the number of honor graduates and students taking rigorous coursework, including Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment. We also have many students attending the ATC, Technical Center, and Brock Environmental Science Program. We are proud of our students’ accomplishments and attribute their success to the hard work of our highly qualified teaching staff and our partnership with you. This year we will continue to challenge each of our students to ensure they reach their full potential.

We appreciate the support from our dedicated community partners and parents. Thank you for your support in ensuring your student comes to school on time and prepared with the materials they need to be successful. Additionally, we encourage you to reach out to our school counselors and teachers early and often should your student experience hardships or challenges. We seek to support each student as they pursue their high school diploma and beyond. Please also consider joining our PTSA and attending the myriad of athletics and student activities taking place throughout the school year.

Arriving at school safely and on time is a priority for us, as it directly impacts instructional time. Should you choose to drop your student off in the morning, please pull through the front loop and have your student exit the vehicle quickly. To ensure a safe school environment, the main entrance doors will open at 7:00 a.m. Should you wish to have your student wait in your vehicle until the doors are open, please park in the student lot or in a visitor’s spot so as to not obstruct traffic.

You must submit the request through ParentVue if your student requires bus transportation. Several ParentSquare messages were sent throughout the summer to explain the process. Students who do not have a request on record will not be permitted to ride a bus.

Parking passes will be available for purchase beginning this month. Please ensure your student is a licensed driver and either a junior or senior. Due to the limited number of parking spaces on campus, passes will be issued to qualified students on a first-come, first-served basis. More details about requirements and the appointment process will be communicated in this newsletter.

On August 11, student schedules should be made available via ParentVue and StudentVue. Should you have scheduling concerns, please follow the process outlined in this edition of the Knightly News. Remember that we hire staff based on student course requests made in February. Therefore, we are unlikely to honor course change requests taking place after the course verification deadline from last spring.

I look forward to meeting our new Knight families and welcoming the rest of our Knights back in the coming weeks. I hope that you and your families enjoy the remainder of your summer!

See you soon!

  • BEACH DISTRICT STATEMENT

Changes to Team Sports Doubleheader Order

Beginning next school year, a change will be made to the order of contests when doubleheaders are played during the regular season at Beach District high schools. This change will affect the sports of varsity and JV basketball, varsity and JV soccer, and varsity lacrosse. In previous years for most of these sports, the girls’ game has always been played before the boys’ game. To ensure compliance with Title IX guidelines, the game order will be inverted midway through the season. For instance, for the first half of the 2023-24 varsity basketball season, the girls’ game will be played before the boys’ game. At the halfway point of the season and for the remainder of the regular season, the boys’ game will be played prior to the girls’ game. The following year in 2024-25, the boys will play the first game during the first half of the season, and the girls will play the first game the second half of the season. This change mirrors the format currently used in Beach District volleyball matches and will only apply to regular season games played at Virginia Beach high schools. For postseason contests, the order of doubleheaders is the responsibility of the organization hosting the tournament, either Region 6A, Region 5A, or the VHSL. Please refer any questions to your school’s student activities coordinator or the coach of one of these sports.
