Student Safety Crossing at West Porter Avenue and Meridian
This partnership came about after receiving reports from Duneland school bus drivers that motorists were not stopping to let students cross the street, despite a state law requiring them to stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk.
Duneland School students walking north to Chesterton Middle School (CMS) or south to Westchester Intermediate School (WIS) and Chesterton High School (CHS) must cross West Porter Ave. in order to get to school. Motorists are obligated by state law to stop for students in the crosswalk when the flashers are activated.
Students can activate the solar-powered flashers, so that they can cross safely, by simply pushing a button. The flashers will remain active long enough for the kids to cross safely, then go dark again.
