Grade & Missing Assignments
ID Badges
ALL students must be wearing their ID and it should be visible at all times. Whether it be their school ID on a lanyard OR a temporary ID (sticker) badge, it MUST be worn.
If a student has lost their ID Badge, please replace it in the front office (it does cost money to replace an ID Badge).
If a student has forgotten their ID Badge, the consequence is last in line at lunch and no Snack Bar.
NEW
Students will be charged for an extensive number of temporary badges! Please be sure to use and wear your issued ID Badge.
Cell Phone Policy
Cell phones are SHUT DOWN and PUT AWAY from 7:30a - 2:20p
- Student are expected to follow EPS expectations for cell phone use.
- There is a progressive plan if students are using their cell phone during the school day.
- If cell phone usage becomes habitual, it can lead to a parent picking up their cell phone in the Front Office.
Science
Hello Thunderhawks!
We are continuing our unit on Weather. Students will begin exploring wind and ocean circulation patterns to see how this impacts regional weather and climate.
Want to engage your student? If you haven’t already done so, try watching a news weather forecast with your student and have a discussion about what is going on in the current weather! On November 4th, there was a very noticeable cold front that came through and we discussed this in our classes - these kids really do notice the weather and are curious about it!
English
Hello Thunderhawks!
This week, we are continuing our grammar workshop. We are practicing our recognition of sentence fragments, run-on sentences, and complete sentences. As we work through being able to recognize the difference, we will progress into writing and correcting run-on sentences and fragments. Next week we will use a poem by Maya Angelou to continue our work with grammar, and also circle back around to adjectives and adverbs

Literacy
Hello Thunderhawks!
We have been really focusing on grammar and mechanics in the past week. We will use Maya Angelou’s poem, Life Doesn’t Frighten Me to continue our focus on sentence fragments, sentences, and subject/predicate agreement. As we read and learn to recognize the elements of a poem, we will also be using the poem’s lines to create complete sentences and correct sentence fragments. We will have a sentence fragments quiz on Thursday, November 10th, and we will have a test next Wednesday over fragments, subject/predicate agreement and run-on sentences.

Math / IA Pre-Algebra
6th Grade Math
This week we continued Unit 4. We worked on Measurement Conversions. Next week we will work on converting numbers as decimals, percents and fractions. Please check in with your student to make sure they are completing the 2 or 3 homework assignments that we give per week. Homework notes generally take less than 15 minutes and is something they can do independently. There is a homework notes assignment that is Due Monday.
Need Help in Math? Here’s what you can do:
Come see your math teacher during pre-advisory (7:10-7:40)
Come do a working lunch. (There is always 1 math teacher available during that time to offer help).
6th Grade IA Pre-Algebra
This week we applied proportions, ratios, and scale factors to solve problems involving scale drawings. Next week we will be solving multi-step problems involving percent increase or decrease, discounts, tips and sales tax.

Geography
Hey ThunderHawk families! Thank you to all who sent photos in and/or participated in our Veterans’ Day Assembly. Heartland was so excited and honored to celebrate the people who have served our country. This past week in Geography we did a large Document Based Questions (DBQ) assignment. Students will have a little bit of time on Monday to finish this up, but it might be a good idea to double check that most of this assignment is done at home! This upcoming week, students will be using their Desk Atlases a whole lot. We are going to spend lots of time practicing reading all sorts of maps, graphs, and charts. I hope your family is looking forward to a wonderful Thanksgiving Break!

As we progress into the semester, I just wanted to send a few reminders of expectations as well as information on some great incentives for our Thunderhawks.
Incentives : Heartland High Fives are in effect! We have already started to celebrate those students who are demonstrating RISE expectations in extraordinary ways. Also, our missing assignment Incentive: SUNDAE FUNDAY is going to be a huge hit!! Students will have the opportunity to earn an ice cream sundae (with toppings!) for not having missing assignments. Below is more information on that:
Cooler Weather: As we start to see cooler weather, hoodies and blankets and hats can become more common at school. Remember, no hats or hoods can be worn in the building, and blankets cannot be worn inside as well.
Pack the Rack: Let’s pack the food pantry with as much supplies as possible as we enter the holiday season. HPO has partnered up with the Heartland food pantry to host a competition between classes to see who can collect the most items. Items can be placed by the learning stairs in each grade level pod. Happy Packing!
It’s going to be a wonderful week!

Fall tips:
Simplify your life, slow down for self-care this fall.
Go outside! Get some fresh air and go for a walk,
Breathe and Breathe again! Breathe in for four seconds, hold your breath for four , breathe out for five seconds can signal to your body that you are in control and choosing to calm down. You can also download an app, such as “Pause” for meditation and there is a “Calm” app for breathing techniques.
You are now in the 2nd 9 weeks; be sure to keep up with your school work. Ask questions if you don’t understand a question.
