March Madness Book Tournament
March seems to be the longest month of the school year so how do we keep students excited about reading and the media center? One way is to do a March Madness tournament! We took the top sixteen books that have been checked out from the library, turned them into the Sweet Sixteen, built brackets out of them, and started the buzz! Students return their filled brackets to the media center and the voting begins on the 16th of March. The brackets on the wall outside the library will be adjusted and the tournament will continue until the last vote on the 31st of March. The next day, the students who had the best brackets will be invited to a doughnut party in the media center to be the first to hear the final winner. The students will vote using a Google form that will be posted on the JCMS media page. Other prizes will be awarded throughout the tournament. I cannot wait to post the winner of the 2015 JCMS March Madness Tournament!

Wonderful workshop for Middle and High School Library Media Coordinators
At our Summer Institute this past summer, I was given the privilege to teach a session with Diane Miller on new titles for Middle and High schools. I created a presentation and (finally) shared it with our cohorts. The information I used for the presentation was taken from a workshop I attended in May from the Bureau of Education and Research, BER.
That’s old news.
The new news is that BER is offering the workshop again this May 13 in Raleigh. The registration cost is $239 (a little pricey, but well worth it). The workshop is all day with a fantastic presenter who really knows her stuff, Patti Tjomsland. She book talks over 100 titles during the day and shares wonderful ideas that she uses in her library. The price also includes a workbook that is a fantastic resource to use not only when purchasing, but when trying to come up with new ideas for promotion.
If you are interested, you can register via phone 1-800-735-3503 M-F 6-6 PST or online at www.ber.org, or contact Nancy Olls for a copy of the registration form.
