August 30th: Principal's Message
Greetings Buccaneer Parents, Students, and Staff,
We hope you had an opportunity to relax and recharge this weekend. We are excited for the start of a new month! Starting a new month is an opportunity to make amends and review what we need to accomplish in order to be better and do better.
Students, remember that grades will be coming out soon. Your first progress report will be coming out on September 18th. Remember to be engaged in all of your classes, complete your assignments, and learn as much as you can! Our first quarter will be over at the end of September. Do not procrastinate! We want you to succeed and achieve your academic goals this year.
Parents, Students, and staff, please be aware that two changes are occurring with the bell schedule this week. For Monday, August 31st and Tuesday, September 1st, our classes will occur asynchronously (in lieu of virtual online instruction). This was agreed upon by our teacher union in order to help families focus on ensuring a successful virtual opening of the school year at our feeder school districts. Teachers will send communications to students regarding the assignments they will need to complete for measuring student attendance for the day. Students, teachers need to account for your engagement and assignments for the day. Please make sure to turn in the asynchronous assignments on time in order to get attendance credit for the day. We wish our families and our feeder school districts a successful 2020-2021 school year opening.
The second schedule change will be permanent while we are in a Distance Learning model. We had to adjust our instructional minutes on Fridays to meet the minimum daily requirement of 240 minutes. The new schedule for Fridays is included below. Instead of starting at 9:00 am on Fridays, our classes will start at 8:20 am. Each class will last 40 minutes. Fridays will end at 1:20 pm. Teachers will have PLCs, or planning meetings, from 1:25 pm through 3:25 pm.
Finally, we will have our Virtual Open House this Thursday, September 3rd, starting at 5:00 pm. We will start with a live feed conducted by our Administration, our Resource Teachers, and our Counselors. You may join our live virtual event by joining us here: https://bit.ly/2G5s7fS. We will then have parents visit their students virtual classrooms. Students will help parents join their virtual classrooms using the links used to attend class each day. The schedule will be posted below.
I know that we provided a ton of information today. Thank you for reading our Newsletters and please email us if you have any questions/concerns.
Thank you for your partnership!
Let us have a great week!
Julissa

WORD OF THE MONTH: RESPECT
We understand that a student's success in school is not only measured in IQ but also in strength of character. This is one of the reasons we, at SOM, highlight a character trait each month. We deem it important in helping our scholars become successful adults. We understand these set of skills will help our Buccaneers achieve their academic and social goals.
