Woods Weekly
Week of October 26th-30th
Classroom Happenings
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Starting this week, students will be allowed to bring in a small snack to have during our reading block since we have such a late lunch. All snacks need to be from our healthy snack list.
I need your help! I would like for my class to do a novel study with the book Fish in a Tree (written by: Lynda Mullaly Hunt) during the month of November. I have 18 copies but would LOVE if everyone in the class could have a copy of it to use as we read and complete activities. If you are willing and able to purchase a copy to donate to our school, it would be greatly appreciated! The book runs between $12 to $17 dollars depending on where it is purchased from. If you are planning on donating a copy of the book, please email me so I know how many copies we will have. Thank you so much!
Here is a little background information about the story. The story focuses on Ally who becomes very creative with hiding the fact that she can't read. With the help of her new teacher, Ally gains confidence and realizes there is nothing wrong with being dyslexic. In fact, she realizes that there is more to herself and everyone around her than the labels that they place on each other.
Here is a look at what is coming up next week:
Science:
We are beginning chapter 4 which will have us exploring the slow processes that change the Earth's surface. We will discuss several types of landforms on earth and the processes of weathering, erosion, and deposition.
Social Studies:
We will resume social studies at the beginning of December.
Math:
This week, we will be reviewing multiplication strategies that we have covered. I will also be introducing the standard algorithm for multiplying 2-digit by 1-digit numbers as well as 2-digit by 2-digit numbers.
Reading:
We are beginning unit 3. In this unit, we will be spending time using information provided by the author as well as our own personal experiences to make inferences about characters. We will also practice using the provided details to visualize what is happening in a story or article. At the end of the week, students will take a short test that covers making inferences.
Writing:
We will be wrapping up our rough drafts of our personal narratives. Students will begin typing up their final copies using Google Docs.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Woods
Spelling: Long and Short "o" Patterns
Students will be tested over all 10 Core Words. Then, I will choose 10 of the Test Words to give them on Friday. For the last word, students have to write the sentence that I say using the spelling word. I take a writing score for their sentence based on spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.
***It is very important that students spend some time each night practicing their spelling words. I suggested to a few kids that they start studying 5 words on the first night. Then the next day, they should review the 5 words from the previous night and begin studying another 5. By the time our spelling test comes on Friday, all words have been practiced.
Another study strategy is to group the words based on similar spelling. This allows them to see patterns within their spelling words, and it can help them remember how they're spelled.***
