TJH Update #14

October 28, 2020

A Message from Dr. Mitzner

This week, I wanted to stop for moment and thank all the teachers of Tays Junior High for learning how to deliver instruction in new ways.

For the teaching staff at TJH, our "whys" have stayed the same. We are here to help children learn, grow, connect, empathize, pick up the pieces from silly mistakes and the list could go on.... However, all of the "what" and "how" we do things have changed. As a parent, you realize this as you try to support your child with their endeavors. These teachers are a beacon of light in these difficult times. It doesn't mean we haven't had struggles... but we are moving forward in new ways to meet the needs of all students during this pandemic. Every week, I am grateful to the teaching staff at Tays for the work they do for students. This week, we also celebrate TJH Teacher of the Year and Rookie Teacher of the Year for 2019-20 - Elizabeth Walls and Emily Varvel. Our PTSA would love to send each one of our 138 teachers and staff home for the Thanksgiving holiday with a delicious pie! Pie In the Sky has extended a great discount for us ($14/pie), but we need your help! Please go to their website (follow the link below in the picture) and purchase a pie (or 2 or 3…) for our wonderful Tays staff!

We also want to make sure you don't miss the Zoom presentation on Thursday, October 29th!! Click here to register!

Hope you have a wonderful week! I am off to the Titan football game!

Nurse's Notes

This has been a wild year so far, and I know there have been a lot of changes. I want to thank everyone so much for being patient and understanding with all of our new policies and procedures with absences and dismissals from the clinic under the KatyISD COVID-19 guidelines. For those of you who are unfamiliar, if your child is absent or sent home from the clinic with an illness with two or more symptoms that are COVID-like, they will need to be seen by their doctor and have a doctor’s note to clear them to return to school. It will be up to the doctor to decide if they need to have a COVID test before they clear them to return.

Flu season is upon us, believe it or not! There are places all around town offering flu shots. Many insurance carriers provide flu shots for no charge under your policy. Check your policy to see if you and your family are covered.

Is your child returning for F2F instruction for 3rd term, and do they need to take medication at school? You can find the necessary forms on the TJH website under clinic. These forms can be dropped off along with the meds any time during the school day. Forms must be signed by your child’s physician if they are to be taken for a period of 15 days or more.

Questions or Concerns? Please don’t hesitate to contact the clinic any time!

Lisa Shurter RN, BSN

As we continue into our fall seasons, it is critical that we remain diligent in following our Covid-19 Risk Mitigation Guidelines. Fans at all competitions are still required to social distance and follow Governor Abbott’s Executive Order GA-29 related to face coverings. We have developed a plan to allow up to 50% capacity at all of our athletic venues. It is critical to maintain social distancing at all times. Each family group may sit together, but must maintain appropriate social distancing from all other groups.

At Rhodes and Legacy Stadiums, it is important to sit in the section where your ticket is assigned. Once in those assigned sections, the responsibility falls on the spectators to spread out and maintain proper distance from one another. If a section appears too full, we will close the section and verify the tickets of those patrons currently seated in the section.

At campus events where sections are not marked, the responsibility falls on the spectators to spread out and maintain proper distance from one another. Observing games the past few weeks, we have noticed more and more spectators gathering in the middle of the seating areas.

While we do not want to reduce capacity at any of our venues, we will take this precaution with any campuses and/or stadiums struggling to adhere to the safety protocols we have in place. Maintaining social distance and wearing a face covering are two of the most critical components to stopping the spread of COVID-19.

Per the University Interscholastic League (UIL), schools not following these guidelines are subject to sanctions, including suspension of contests or discontinuation of public access to games by the local UIL District Executive Committee and/or the UIL State Executive Committee.

Bully Prevention Month

October is National Bully Prevention Month. Each week the counselors will challenge our students to show kindness through various Character Strong Dares. The challenges will be sent through Canvas to all students as well as be displayed in the café during lunch. At the end of each week students are asked to complete a survey to reflect on their participation in this week’s challenge. Attached is the Kindness Dare for this week.
