German Corner
„„Guten Tag!“ „Hallo!“ These are the typical ways German-speakers greet each other on the street and these are the greetings we teach here at SHS. Did you know, however, that there is a colloquial greeting that can trace its origins to Latin? “Servus” is a typical greeting in Southern Germany and Austria. “Servus” roughly translates as “at your service”. The term is versatile and can be used both as a greeting and as a way of saying goodbye. If you find yourself in Munich or Innsbruck, you are likely to hear people saying “Servus” to one another as they move about the town. This expression is heard in other countries as well. I was greeted this way when I lived and worked in Budapest, Hungary. Next time you meet a German-speaker be sure to impress them with this non-traditional way of saying hello. Servus liebe Freunde und bis nächste Woche!
