WALKOUT EDITION
MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Now is our moment to find LONG TERM REVENUE solutions to fund core services that benefit students in and out of the classroom. While I realize we have reached a time where having a vision for a fully funded educational system is hard because we've been starved for so long, I'm here to tell you it is in our grasp. There is no question that this group of teachers is in this profession for our students. Whether you are in a urban, suburban, rural or private school--whether your school is falling apart or have new facilities from a bond issue your community--whether you receive funding from the formula or outside of the formula--it is now time to step up and ask your legislator for progressive funding sources for our state.
There are agencies beyond education that serve our students such as DHS and mental health that need funding too. It is no coincidence that the most asked question before the walkout was how some students would survive without free and reduced lunch. The bigger question is, "Why are schools the only resource for our kids." It is time for our legislators to step up for our kids.
Please contact your legislator about supporting progressive and stable funding for our future. Whether you are fighting at the Capitol or from your home district, be an advocate for your kids and the future of Oklahoma. Now is the time.
Below please find some legislative cheatsheets created by my colleagues as our unions have failed to arm us with information for this fight. There has been resistance to capital gains due to a deal to not hear it if GPT was moved to 5%, so looking at restoring income tax brackets via HB 3113 is an option Republicans have stated preference for instead of capital gains. They would have to vote to suspend the rules to hear it as it didn't make it out of committee. Taxation was an option also brought up by Republican Kirk Humphreys this morning on Flashpoint (am including the chart he held up on the show).
