National Hispanic Heritage Month - September 15 to October 15, 2022 Below are some relevant and engrossing books featuring Latinx/Hispanic characters and experiences. Click on the book title to place it on hold or click on the Kirkus link for a full book review.
National Hispanic Heritage Month - September 15 to October 15, 2022
“Hispanic Heritage Month is an annual celebration in the United States that honors the history, culture, and contributions of Americans whose ancestry can be traced to 20 countries and one territory — which includes Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Spain. While the official and more common umbrella term, “Hispanic” is something that most of us are familiar with, this does not represent the diverse races, cultures, and Indigenous languages that encompass this large community. This is why you may also see this recognized as Latinx Heritage Month.”
“September 15th was chosen as the kickoff date since it coincides with the Independence Day celebrations of five countries (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua), followed by Mexico on September 16th, Chile on the 18th, and Belize on the 21st. Another important date that falls within this 30-day period is Día de la Raza, or Indigenous Peoples Day, which is celebrated in Mexico on October 12th.” How To Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

What Being Hispanic and Latinx Means in the United States By Fernanda Ponce Enjoy this first person account of identity which addresses stereotypes and assumptions and invites the audience to dig deeper into the Latinx experience.
Check out this movie review about a moving love letter to immigrants and their children, Mija: A Disney Original Documentary directed by Isabel Castro, which captures the emotional and complex stories of Doris Muñoz and Jacks Haupt, two daughters of undocumented immigrants from Mexico, navigating their careers in the music industry.
Another great resource is visiting museums which gives you the opportunity to get up close and immerse yourself in the art, festivities, or people showcasing their unique perspectives. Find relevant exhibits and collections on the National Hispanic American Heritage Month website.

We Light Up The Sky By Lilliam Rivera “This unlikely trio comes together to solve the puzzling appearance of a strange teenage girl who looks exactly like Tasha. Rivera offers an eerie, immersive page-turner that immediately grips readers in large part because of her skilled characterization that adds emotional richness to an engaging extraterrestrial mystery. The bond that develops between Pedro, Luna, and Rafa reflects the ways that humanity can come to the fore even when faced with the most terrifying of dangers. The inclusion of the coronavirus pandemic, Black Lives Matter protests, and the distrust of communities of color toward the police paints just the right social context for the lives of these near-contemporary Southern California teens. Characters are cued as Latinx.” Read the full review at Kirkus

Once I Was You By Maria Hinojosa “Unlike many Latinx immigrants who come to the U.S. to escape oppression, Hinojosa arrived in 1962 as a 1-year-old when her father was recruited for a position as a research scientist at the University of Chicago. Growing up in the “multicultural oasis” of Hyde Park, she was unaware of the “otherwise intensely racially segregated city.” She struggled, too, to define her perspective as a journalist, which increasingly focused on the plight of immigrants. In 1986, she saw her first immigrant detention camp and came away shocked. She movingly bears witness to the dehumanizing, degrading treatment of immigrants; everyone, she urges, must take action “to make us all feel connected and visible.” Read the full review at Kirkus

Graduation Information
To help prepare for this day we need some information from all seniors. Please complete this survey by the end of September. There are two parts. First of all, we need to know how you would like your name to appear on your diploma. The second part will give us information about sizing for your cap and gown. All students need to complete this regardless of their intent to participate in the graduation ceremony. These items are paid for by the district as part of your graduation fee.
