Smith Family Farms Study Trip!

On Thursday of this week, the 2nd graders got to travel to Smith Family Farms! On this study trip we got to see first hand and learn more about both plant and animal life cycles that occur on a farm. We also got to enjoy a hay ride, lunch with friends, and we got to pick our own pumpkins! We plan to do various activities with pumpkins throughout the month of October and can't wait to see where our curiosities take us!

Thank you to the chaperones who volunteered their time and joined us! We enjoyed having you spend the day with us!

Everything Apples

Thank you SO much for sending apples last week and this week. The kids had so much fun learning more about apples and sharing with the class. We wondered about apples, read about apples, graphed the different kinds of apples we brought in with a concrete graph and a bar graph, wrote descriptive summaries about our apples, and even got to eat our apples! Next week, we will be making applesauce after we research difference applesauce recipes!

We Are Learning...

Reading

During reading this week we continued to focus on Beginning, Middle, and End. We will be also focus on making inferences. We will be taking about what we already know, thinking about clues from the text, then coming up with a theory about a part of the book! (For example: If I see a boy wearing a party hat, I might infer it is his birthday.) We will learn that by making inferences we can dig in deeper to a character, plot, or problem in a story.

Writing

In writing this week we have chosen our favorite personal narrative to take through the editing process. During the editing process we learned how important it is to add details. We have also discussed how to add correct punctuation marks and capital letters . The week of fall break and the week after I hope to have our final drafts of these complete then ready to share on SeeSaw!

Word Study

Word study in 2nd grade includes spelling, phonics, and vocabulary development. Next week we will continue to review some of the important sounds and patterns in our language, helping us to build a foundation for reading, writing, and spelling.

Math

In math next week, we will continue to focus on place value. We will focus on greater than, less than, 10 more and 10 less, and odd and even numbers.

Science

This week in science we continued looking at the moon phases and watching the changes the moon makes over the course of a month. The kids had so much fun creating the different phases of the moon using Oreo cookies!!
