Pregnancy and Lactation.
by: Sierra Phillips
Pregnancy.
During pregnancy your body goes through hormonal, physical, and psychological changes, therefore your nutrient needs will be different than a woman who is not pregnant to keep you and the baby/babies healthy.
Weight Gain.
You will gain at least 15-20 pounds of water weight in this time period. When choosing foods you should pick ones that are low in fat, avoid fish, and increase dairy intake.
Foods you should eat.
Lactation
What you eat, your baby eats too.
The mother requires an extra 300-400 calories when breastfeeding. In lactation you should increase your water, calcium, protein and folic acid intake. You should also increase your calories, based on your body weight. Vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, and whole grain are usually suggested.
