WEEK OF JANUARY 28-FEBRUARY 1, 2019
TRUSTEES SERVING THE NORTHWEST CLUSTER CAMPUSES
THANK YOU TRUSTEES FOR ALL YOU DO FOR OUR SCHOLARS IN THE NORTHWEST ELEMENTARY CLUSTER! YOU ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED!
NATIONAL SCHOOL BOARD RECOGNITION MONTH!
January is School Board Recognition Month—a great time to focus on the crucial role an elected board of trustees plays in our communities and schools. Plan now to show your school board members you appreciate their dedication and hard work. They are extraordinary people who voluntarily tackle the enormous job of governing school districts. Their actions and decisions affect the present and future lives of our children.
This year’s theme is “Planting Seeds of Success.” Dallas ISD trustees do that by not only making districtwide policy and purchasing decisions at monthly meetings but also by visiting schools and talking with constituents in their individual districts.
Overall, school boards are charged with establishing a vision for a district’s education program, designing a structure to achieve that vision, ensuring that schools are accountable to the community, and advocating for continuous improvement in student achievement.
Recognizing board members for this commitment and sacrifice takes a combined effort on the part of all those they serve: administrators, school staff, students, and the community. Although showing appreciation should be a year-round process, taking advantage of the designated School Board Recognition Month in January assures that these important people receive some of the thanks they deserve.

A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Distinguished Leaders,
As I have visited campuses this week, it is apparent that your administrative teams are focusing on what is important, STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT! Continue to keep your focus in each classroom and coaching your leadership team on what 'Good First Instruction' looks like and sounds like. Coaching your leadership team on effective, real time, in the moment, feedback is also key. As I have referenced to several of you, the 6 Steps to Effective Feedback in the Leverage Leadership 2.0 book Chapter 4, it is evident that the way you give feedback makes a difference on how the leadership team and teachers own the feedback and put it into action. The key is to probe and not provide answers, to hold the leaders/teachers accountable.
When visiting classrooms, be intentional and listen for the following:
- What type of tasks are being done by scholars?
- Are the tasks high level tasks?
- What is the teacher doing?
- What is/are the scholar/scholars doing and saying?
Principals and the leadership teams have a great opportunity on the upcoming February 15 District Campus Professional Development day, to get in front of teachers. Be sure to structure this day around the HIGHEST leverage points that will assist in moving the instruction for each of your campuses. Exceeding targets should be everyone's focus and the goal can only be done if EVERYONE is focused on the HIGHEST leverage points of the individual campus. Ensure to review the School Performance Framework with your staff. How does your campus plan on moving to the next level to gain an SPF Rating of an 'A'? become a GOLD RIBBON SCHOOL?
It was great to see all our feeder leaders attend 'Show Call; training at Tom Field this week. It is apparent that 'Show Call' was the necessary piece to be able to solidify successful Aggressive Monitoring. Now you have the tools to enable you to move your campus forward. I am more than confident that ALL our feeder leaders are even more inspired than before to continue motivating and inspiring academic change.
Covey says it best, "Change starts with me!" We enter this profession not as a job or career but as a calling. In any successful school, we have to lead not just through compliance but through empowerment. The following choices we make affects our mission as educators:
- rebelling or quiting
- malicious obedience
- willing compliance
- cheerful cooperation
- heartfelt commitmet
- creative excitement
Let the creative excitement inspire us all be the voice for the future of our scholars. What would heartfelt commitment and creative excitement look like? What changes will we make to enable our staff to feel empowered to lead? Therefore, focus with The End in mind, Sharpen your Saw and remember change starts with YOU!
Have an awesome week LEADING, COACHING, TEACHING, LEARNING & MAKING ACADEMIC ADJUSTMENTS!
Enjoy your extended weekend!

Spring Budget Timeline for the Conrad/Thomas Jefferson Elementary Cluster
There should not be any surprises or anything to dispute as if there were any disputes or concerns, they should have been discussed with me prior to the timeline. All of you were give your numbers. Therefore, my expectation is that we all get this process completed in a seamless manner.
Second Annual DFW School Leader Survey
Dallas ISD is participating in the second annual DFW School Leader Survey, which is intended to help districts and others across our region understand how we can continue to attract, prepare, develop and retain excellent school leaders, both at the principal position as well as other campus leadership positions. As part of this project, we would greatly appreciate your participation in the survey to understand your perspective about your experiences and where we can improve to better support you and other leaders across our district.
Participating in this survey is highly encouraged, but voluntary. This survey is being administered and analyzed by a third party. The survey results will remain entirely anonymous, and will only be looked at in aggregate, meaning no results will be shown based on any individual’s responses. Only the aggregate results of the survey will be shared with the school district – the survey data itself will remain confidential and will not be released to the district.
Respondents who fully complete the survey will be eligible to enter into a raffle for one of fifty $100 visa gift cards that will be drawn at random after the survey closes. The survey should take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete and must be completed by the end of the day on January 30th.
Below is the button for the survey! Please fill it out!
Middle of the Year I-SIP Assessment
We are in the MOY assessment window for Pre-K-2, so we are sending out the weekly updates on completion.
· All K-2 students should assess with ISP
· We strongly encourage Kinder to do TX-KEA again.
· Pre-K should be doing CIRCLE.
Attached are the completion rates so far, through today. Everyone needs to get into the “blue,” which means at least 98% of students are assessed.
Below is a reminder on which language the student should be assessed in. As always, students can assess in multiple languages, but they should definitely test according to the guidelines below.
