Memorial Day 2022
Monday, May 30, 2022, is Memorial Day when we celebrate the brave servicemen and servicewomen who died defending our country. It’s a day of remembrance to honor the sacrifice made by the men and women who have died during their service in the United States military.
Whether you celebrate with family and friends at a cookout or have a moment of silence with your loved ones, Memorial Day is a special time to honor America’s history and commemorate the bravery, courage, and honor of our troops.
Uvalde, Texas
We are mourning as we continue to learn more about the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Texas’ Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District earlier this week. Our hearts go out to these students, families, school staff, and the community. Like many of you, we worry about the frequency of these events across our country and understand the anxiety that many of our students, staff, and families may be experiencing.
Given our students’ exposure to technology, many of them have likely seen information about the tragedy in Uvalde, so this will undoubtedly be a discussion among families throughout the nation for days to come. Our staff and counselors will be available for students in school as needed, and we have provided you with links to a resource that might support you as you process this event with your child(ren). Please reach out to one of your child’s counselors if you feel your child needs specific support in processing this incident.

We hope you will help us reassure your children that we have many safety protocols. Our staff will continue to work closely with our students and families when they are experiencing difficult situations. We always encourage all members of our community to speak up when they have a concern. Please be assured that safety and wellness continue to be a top priority across our district and each school.

Our current COVID cases between May 19 and May 25, 2022, are as follows:
Maynard High School: 2 students, 3 staff member
Fowler School: 15 students, 2 staff members
Green Meadow Elementary School: 6 students, 3 staff members
I have spoken with the local board of health who agreed with the recommendation to encourage mask-wearing at this time. As a reminder, we are an optional mask school, and everyone can wear a mask within the school buildings. At this time, we encourage everyone to wear a mask. The purpose is to continue to have all students and staff in school learning and remaining healthy. Please be vigilant and stay home if you are sick. We wish those who need it a speedy recovery.
Isolation and quarantine guidance and protocols as of May 25, 2022.
Guidance for Children in Child Care, K-12, OST, and Recreational Camp Settings:
- Quarantine for asymptomatic exposed children, regardless of where the exposure occurred, is no longer required for these settings. Children who are identified as close contacts may continue to attend programming as long as they remain asymptomatic. Those who can mask should do so until Day 10. A test on Days 2 and 5 is recommended, but not required.
- Children who test positive must isolate for at least 5 days. If they are asymptomatic or symptoms are resolving and they have been fever free for 24 hours, they may return to programming after Day 5, provided:
- If the child is able to mask, they must do so through Day 10.
- If the child is unable to mask, they must have a negative test on Day 5 or later in order to return to programming prior to day 11.
- Symptomatic children can remain in their school or program if they are tested immediately onsite, and that test is negative. Best practice would also include wearing a mask, if possible, until symptoms are fully resolved.
- If the symptomatic child cannot be tested immediately, they should be sent home and allowed to return to their program or school if they test negative, or they have been fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication and their symptoms have resolved, or if a medical professional makes an alternative diagnosis. A negative test is strongly recommended for return if the latter two conditions are met.
On May 25, 2022, DESE, the Executive Office of Health and Human Services, and the Department of Public Health announced an update to the COVID-19 Testing Program for the rest of the 2021-22 school year, summer and fall of 2022.
