Week 3, T2 2022
20/5/22 - He Pānui Wiki Toru, Whānga Tuarua
Tēnā koutou i tēnei ahiahi (good afternoon/evening everyone).
It has been fantastic to see so many things happening this week. The week has started and finished with 'Bully Free Week' - nice to see so many people supporting 'Pink Shirt Day'. Jess from Hockey Wairarapa started Small Sticks on Tuesday and Mrs Hooper got the Jump Jam practices underway. We had our Year 7&8 basketball team in action on Wednesday evening at Kuranui College; a Year 5&6 as well as a year 7&8 rippa rugby team playing down in Carterton; the Gladdy netball team had a training session with the Pulse and 'Outdoor Classroom Day' on Thursday. The weather played its part beautifully for all of our week's events including Wednesday and Thursday cross country training.
As you know Sophie Mitchell is taking parental leave from the 12th of September. We are delighted to announce that Caryn Vorster will be doing Sophie's parental leave cover in Kourarau Syndicate. We welcome Caryn to our team. Caryn is very familiar with our school as she is often here relieving.
Our fabulous pie fundraiser was a real hit - a massive thanks to the parents who were able to come down and help sort the pies (Trish Edwards; Fiona McKeown; Sarah McGregor; Nadia Withers & Amy Strang. As well as Liz Mason for organising the fundraiser on behalf of FoGS. Thanks also to everyone who purchased pies - you've made the school $1139.39). Great to see the seniors pitching in to help load the empty boxes.
Another big 'shout out' to Andy Anderson for delivering 6 lovely new chickens that have been donated by his neighbour Paul Reid. The new chooks are settling in well. The kids are loving them & have been busy giving each a name along with some tender loving care.
We look forward to seeing those that can make it on Sunday. We are starting with a working bee at 10, followed by the opportunity to have a walk through the classrooms, picnic lunch (BYO kai) and a cricket match to christen the new cricket pitch. We will be planting harakeke (flax) up in the mountain bike track, spread the new playground bark around, weed the gardens etc.. A list will be up on the wall by the office.
Values Focus This Week
Outdoor Classroom Day
We are delighted to be getting kapa haka up and running as of next Monday. The very talented Keepa Smith from Hurunui-o-Rangi will be leading the sessions. Keepa has recently returned from Sydney and has spent his life participating in and tutoring kapa haka, polygroups, music, song and dance. We are super excited to have him on board here at Gladstone School. Students will be going for 1/2 hour sessions in their syndicates.
Looking forward to seeing you on Sunday and our Year 3/6 parents next Wednesday for our transition evenings.
Nga manaakitanga,
Belinda
Camps
Information has gone out about the upcoming Year 5/6 and Year 7/8 camps. Look our for Year 3/4 details on Seesaw this afternoon. Please email Belinda (principal@gladstone1.school.nz) if your whānau needs some financial assistance or a payment plan. We absolutely want to see all of our tamariki going on camp with their classmates so please talk to Belinda so we can work something out - confidentiality assured. In Term 3 we will be sending home a quick whānau survey to find out how our school families feel about A. going on camps; B. for how long; C. what's an affordable 'ceiling' etc... As a school/BoT we reviewed our Health & PE curriculum (including EOTC) in 2021 and agreed upon the camp progression. We will review things again in Term 3 and would welcome your thoughts.
FoGS (Friends of Gladstone School) are busy planning for their next fundraising event - catering a school reunion function. On this occasion the best way we can help FoGS is to either offer to help with food preparation or to donate a small amount of money (if you are able) to the FoGS account for the purchase of ingredients - money donations please by Monday 30th of May. If you are able to help with food preparation please email: rachel@gladstone1.school.nz.

Buses
We are aware that there are concerns around the Cavelands pick up point. Please pass these concerns onto both ourselves (graham@gladstone1.school.nz) and GoBus. We are continuing to work with GoBus on an extension of this route down towards Manaia Road - as soon as we have an outcome, we will let you know.
COVID-19 Case Number Update
We have 1 current student case of COVID in our school that we know of. Please continue to test regularly if someone in your household is presenting with symptoms. We do have a tummy bug doing the rounds - students need to stay home for 48hours after the last symptom has presented itself.
Assembly
Thanks very much to Noah & Willem for running assembly this week. You did a fabulous job - thank you.
