Orana Catholic Primary School
Term 3, Week 8, 2021.
Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.
Blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
Dear Parents and Carers,
On 8th September, the church acknowledges the birth of Mary. Mary has taught us how to put our faith in God. She provides us with an aspirational model of trust and willingness to serve God.
It was “Are you OK?” Day yesterday. Many thanks to Kath Warburton, our Social Worker, for highlighting the importance of this initiative to our staff. This year’s message is “Are they really ok? Ask them today. Your conversation could change a life."
For more information on mental health and wellbeing please contact our Social Worker Kath Warburton and refer to her weekly newsletter section below for various resources.
National Child Protection Week runs from the 5th to 11th September. We often talk about child safety and refer to what our emotions are telling us and who we can talk to if we are worried or feel unsafe. In the digital age this should include online behaviour. Talk regularly with your children about what they are doing online and how they should talk to a trusted adult including parents and teachers should they feel threatened or unsafe online.
Orana Catholic Primary School's music program has once again been highly successful in the Catholic Performing Arts Festival. Congratulation to our music students below and Miss Sarah Draper for her music leadership.
Orana Concert Band - Winners of the Catholic School Parents WA Award - Concert Band Primary section.
James Giuffre and Patrick Winfield - Winners of the Catholic School Parents WA Golden Jubilee Award - Instrumental Duet Primary section
These award winners will be presented with the Perpetual Shield at the Festival Concert.
In addition, Lara Vytialingam is the recipient of an Outstanding Award recommended by the Adjudicator and Lara has been invited to perform at the Festival Concert next Monday night at the RAC Arena.
Congratulations also to the Social Justice Leadership Team on their successful Book and Toy Sale. Over $300 was raised which will be used for St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal.
Tonight, the P and F will host the disco. I'm sure the children will have a fabulous time dancing and joining together in fun musical games. Many thanks to Kate Guilfoyle and her team of amazing volunteers. Events such as these take hours and hours of preparation to ensure our students are safe and catered for, amongst the fun.
Thank you to parents who have been involved in the many events that have occurred recently including the Science Week Busy Bee, the Netball Windup, the Fathers’ Day Breakfast, the Performing Arts Performances, the P and F Disco and the Open Night Sausage Sizzle. We are blessed at Orana Catholic Primary School to have such a caring, involved and committed community. Thank you for what you do for our students.
Next Wednesday, 15th September, we will have our annual Open Night from 5pm-7pm. Classrooms including specialist rooms will be opened for you to walk through and view the learning on display. The Book Fair will also be on in the Library. Students whose parents are supportive of the school and are involved in the school, achieve better outcomes. The students will be very excited to have you here! Thank you to the Graduation Fundraising Committee for providing a dinner option. Orders via the P and F shop close on Sunday at 10pm. Please note, Open Night is not a time for individual parent meeting discussions. Our OSHC Service will not be open for viewing.
Carpark habits continue to put student safety at risk. The carpark in front of the office is not a drop off area; this is unsafe for children. The green shed drive through line is the only area for student drop off and as the name suggests is for driving through, not getting out of the car. Every day, parents are seen putting their own children at risk by dropping them in the middle of a carpark and crossing the carpark without using a crosswalk. Please always prioritise child safety.
Please pray for our Year 6 Students who will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation this weekend at the Saints John and Paul Parish. This is one of the Sacraments of Initiation and a very important step in their faith journey, as the students themselves commit to their faith.

Faith In Action
Sacrament of Confirmation
Our children in Year Six will be confirmed this weekend. This is the second Sacrament of Initiation into our faith. It is a commitment of a mature Christian and a deepening of our baptismal gifts. Confirmation brings us the graces of the Holy Spirit that were granted to the apostles on Pentecost Sunday and is a sacrament of empowerment. It gives us the strength to follow Jesus and to become involved in His mission, which Jesus left to the Church. ‘We are the Church’. Confirmation is administered by the laying-on of hands by the bishop or appointed priest, and the anointing with Chrism accompanied by prayer. Our candidates choose a sponsor for this sacrament. This is a confirmed Catholic whom the child admires and can rely on for support as they grow. Please keep our children in your prayers.
Please invite grandparents to our Mass this Friday, 17th September at 9.30am to celebrate the wonderful people they are. After Mass, we welcome grandparents to visit the classrooms to investigate what happens at Orana. At 10.40am, morning tea will be served in the hall. If parents who are able, can supply a plate of morning tea (no food that requires re-heating), please drop off to the hall kitchen prior to Mass. Thank you.
Reconciliation Retreat – Postponed Again to Monday, 18th October.
The date for the Reconciliation Retreat at Schoenstatt Shrine (children in Year Three) has been postponed again as Sr Lisette is unwell. Please say a prayer for her to return to her lovely vibrant self. This will take place in the 2nd week of Term 4, 18th October.
Our Leadership Groups - Quaddies
Quaddies is the leadership group which places toys and activities in the Quad for lunchtime play. The students cart trolleys filled with fun items to and from the library.
The main idea is to cater for children who want to play but do not want to go out onto the Oval or into the Library. It is an in-between space where they can breathe fresh air, talk with their friends and play games.
The Year 6 students roster themselves to set up and tidy up each day. They are also available to assist the younger students to settle into play.
From our Parish of Saints John & Paul
Fr Thai is back from his holiday with many exciting stories about his travels in the beautiful north of our state.
Please visit the Parish website for the latest information on weekend Masses.

BOOK FAIR NEWS
During Open Night, this Wednesday evening, the Library will be holding the annual Scholastic Book Fair. This pop-up bookshop allows families to browse and buy books for themselves or as gifts for others from over 50 publishers.
Please come through our front doors and take a look around. For your convenience there will be an Eftpos machine. The school receives a bonus for holding the fair and uses this to purchase books for the school library.
Stretch Crew News
Our Stretch Crew were delighted to meet Mrs Claire Orange, co-author of Highway Heroes, at our last session. We had invited Claire to discuss the possibility of podcasting some of her resources. Claire actually had bigger ideas and asked whether Stretch Crew could lend their voices to the new digital products her company is producing around child safety. Claire very generously also offered to allow Stretch Crew to join DiGii Social which is her new app teaching students about cybersafety. Along with a school in Victoria our children will have access in order to locate any coding problems but also to learn along the way the do’s and dont’s of social media for their age group. We are overwhelmed to be part of Claire’s work. Claire is a child and family mental health author, advocate and speaker. To find out more, please visit Claire’s website: http://claireorange.com.au
