Hello Freshman!
Spring Testing Is Around the Corner!
Mark your calendars! TESTING (for in-person and virtual students) begins after we return from Spring Break. SAT and PSAT testing will be on April 12, while ACT WorkKeys and MME will be on April 13. It is important for students to attend their scheduled test days. Parents, please try to plan accordingly with any outside appointments so your student does not miss their test on these days. Thank you!
More testing details specific to each grade level will be emailed out to students and parents as it gets closer.
Please be reminded that all Juniors are required by the Michigan Department of Education to complete all three tests as a graduation requirement - SAT, Workkeys, and MSTEP.

Summer Arts Scholarship
Sue Drummond Scholarship applications are open now through April 5th! The Sue Drummond Arts Education Scholarship Program offers financial assistance to students pursuing summer arts opportunities. This program is open to Barry County students entering 9th through 12th grades in the following school year.
Students applying for the Sue Drummond Arts Education Scholarship must:
• Complete the online application
• Submit a reference letter from a relevant professional (e.g. an art teacher, a private music instructor)
• Submit supplemental application materials (e.g. a brief performance video or a portfolio)
• If selected, participate in a brief in-person audition and interview

Affordable (or free) Summer Pre-College Programs
Arizona State University Summer Journalism Institute (In-Person): The Cronkite School’s flagship camp, the Summer Journalism Institute guides top-performing high school students in intensive, hands-on experiences in broadcast and digital journalism. Participants will spend two weeks fully immersed in reporting and writing stories, producing newscasts and creating multimedia content. June 11-17, 2023. *Deadline to apply April 9th
Carnegie Mellon University Computer Science Scholars: The Computer Science Scholars (CSS) program provides students who have historically been excluded in the field of computer science an opportunity to explore the field of computer science with full-time faculty, staff and researchers who are leaders in the field. As Computer Science Scholars, students will take a deep dive into the field of Computer Science through a combination of classroom instruction, hands-on research projects, seminars, and industry engagement with leading tech companies in the country. In addition to their academic experiences, students will have the opportunity to develop meaningful connections with peers and mentors and establish a life-long love for computer science. *only current sophomores are eligible
Girls Who Code Summer Program (virtual): Choose from a 2-week immersion program or a 6-week self-paced experience that will allow you to meet other students and learn in the style that works best for you! All high school students who identify as girls or non-binary can apply, and no prior computer science experience is required.
Howard University High School Summer Enrichment Science Academy: QUALIFICATIONS: Interest in Pharmacy as a career, US citizen or permanent resident, high school junior or senior, cumulative GPA of 2.75, high aptitude for science and mathematics. Tuesday, June 20-29th, 2023. *Deadline to apply April 1st
Missouri University of Science and Technology Summer Camps: Join scientific innovators for an exciting summer on the Missouri S&T campus. Our camps are all about discovering and exploring what it takes to have a future career in the business, science, communication, math, technology, and engineering fields. Campers have the opportunity to learn about explosives, tour a nuclear reactor, explore diverse engineering careers, create art, serve as environmentalists, travel to the edge of space, and prepare to become future STEM leaders.
University of Chicago Emerging Rural Leaders: Top juniors from rural and small-town high schools are invited to apply for an opportunity to participate in a Summer Session course free of charge. Students selected will receive a full scholarship to enroll in a 4-week academic program. The program is comprised of 2 parts:
1) 3-week academic course remotely taught online; and
2) Phoenix Week, a one-week series of workshops and activities hosted on the University of Chicago.

Summer Engineering Experiences at the University of Dayton: In-person residential Summer Engineering Experiences at the University of Dayton (SEE-UD) are here! We are offering in-person summer camps to rising high school seniors (class of 2024) and juniors (class of 2025). Our experiences will expose you to the world of engineering and student life at the University of Dayton. You will have the opportunity to explore the diverse fields of engineering through collaborative and interactive, faculty-led sessions.
Love Coding or Interested in Learning? -Consider this virtual summer course offered by the University of Michigan!
Interested in Coding? Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Michigan is excited to be offering a virtual course that high school students can participate in this summer, The Joy Of Coding, which takes place June 21- August 2, 2023.
The Joy of Coding is an online course specially created for anyone who wants to experience first-hand the power and thrill of coding computers to do amazing things. Created with high school students in mind, it is a great way for anyone to step into the wondrous world of coding. You’ll learn by doing and experience how coding powers apps such as Snapchat and TikTok.
No prior coding experience is required! Anyone who wants to learn is welcome!
Students will:
· Receive a certificate of accomplishment to include in college applications
Prerequisites
Have taken and enjoyed Algebra
Understand the concept of variables and functions
Understand basic manipulations of functions and variables
Know how to compute f(0) and f(1) when, for example, f(x) = sin(x)
For priority consideration, submit an application by April 30, 2023!
The cost is $125, but there are scholarships for those in need to pay for the entire cost of the course. See Mrs. Heaton for further details.
