Congratulations! You are enrolled as a member of the premier youth organization in the United States – 4-H! We welcome you back to another exciting year of Otoe County 4-H and we welcome our new 4-H Clover Kid members to the program.
The information in this update highlights the general livestock rules for you to complete the Clover Kid Animal Caretaker Project and to exhibit at the Otoe County Fair. As always, all information can be found in the Otoe County Fairbook that was in your April 19th Penny Press. If you can’t locate your copy, please stop in the Nebraska Extension in Otoe County Office to pick up a copy.
Clover Kid Handbook
Ownership and Identification
Proof of ownership (by completing the appropriate ID sheet and turning it into the Extension Office) in the 4-H & FFA division must be established by the following methods and dates:
- Beef - Bucket Calf: EID Ear Tag (JUNE 15) ID Sheet
- Companion Animals – Photo (June 15) ID Sheet
- Goats - Dairy: Photo/Drawing/Tattoo or Reg. Tag (JUNE 15) ID Sheet
- Goats - Breeding Meat: USDA scrapie ID tag (JUNE 15) ID Sheet
- Goats - Market Meat: USDA scrapie ID tag (JUNE 15) ID Sheet
- Poultry - Description (JUNE 15) ID Sheet
- Rabbits - Tattoo in left ear (JUNE 15) ID Sheet
- Sheep - Market: 4-H Ear Tag (June 15) with photo if not done at optional weigh-in/tagging on May 15. ID Sheet
- Swine - EID Tag with photo of tag in ear (June 15) ID Sheet

Entries/Number of Entries
At entry time, (July 12, 2021) each 4-H member of a family holding their animals in joint ownership must designate on the entry sheet which animal(s) he or she plans to show. Clover Kids members may only exhibit (1) one animal per species.

Dress Code
Clover Kids
Clover Kid dogs will be brought for the day of show only during fair. Entry sheets must be filled out for all Clover Kid animals. If stalling the complete fair then Clover Kids are required to follow the same stalling rules as a regular 4-H animal exhibitor (cost, entry time, release time, herdsmanship, etc.)
Grooming of Livestock
Preparation and grooming of an animal should be the primary responsibility of the Otoe County Fair exhibitor, however, assistance may be provided by other Otoe County Fair 4-H or FFA exhibitors and/or family members, legal guardian of the exhibitor, and leaders. Please see page 7 of the 2021 Otoe County Fairbook for a complete list of rules.
- The 4-H Beef Shows including Clover Kid Bucket Calf is Blow and Go. Guidelines for Blow and Go are found on page 7 of the Fairbook.
- Water and soap are the only acceptable fluids that can be used on lambs
- Hogs must be shown without hairdressing compounds. This includes oil, powder or any other coat dressing compound. Water is permitted.
Stalling and Release
Clover Kid animals will stall as noted below for each species. If the animal is coming the day of the show only, they need to arrive at the designated time before the show and be taken home that same day. Temporary stalls or tie out area will be provided. If stalling the complete fair then Clover Kids are required to follow the same stalling rules as a regular 4-H animal exhibitor (cost, entry time, release time, herdsmanship, etc.).
- Bucket Calf – Clover Kid Bucket Calves will be stalled the entire fair
- Companion Animal – Day of show only
- Dog – Day of show only
- Goats (Dairy & Meat) –will be stalled the entire fair
- Poultry – will be caged the entire fair
- Rabbits – will be caged the entire fair
- Sheep – will be stalled the entire fair
- Swine – will be stalled the entire fair
Clover Kid Bucket Calves
Clover Kid Bucket calves must be no more than six (6) months of age and weigh no more than 350 pounds. This is a county, state and national 4-H rule. A halter must be used and Clover Kids must be accompanied in the show ring by an older 4-H member or adult over the age of 14.
Tie-Outs - Beef have a designated tie-out area. Use of the tie-outs is on a first come first serve basis. You may bring panels. The designed tie-out area is the ONLY area allowed for tie-outs between 8:30 p.m. and 8:30 a.m.
