Principal's Messages
Dear families,
Our Hiawatha Virtual Night was a success! It was so nice to connect with our Hiawatha community and see your faces. Knowing that we probably won't be gathering in person this year, I am hoping to set up more opportunities for us to connect. Below you will find a recording of the meeting, our Day at Hiawatha video, and the Google presentation I used. In full disclosure, I missed recording the first 10 minutes or so.

Hiawatha Title 1 Annual Meeting
Dear Families,
As a school that receives Title 1 funds, Hiawatha is required to convene an annual meeting to inform parents of Title I students of Title I requirements and their rights to be involved in the Title I program. This meeting will take place on December 17th at 5:00. To participate, click this link: Title 1 Zoom Link Password is Title1
The meeting will provide parents of Title I students with timely information about Title I programs and assist parents in understanding academic content standards, assessments, and how to monitor and improve the achievement of their children.
Thank you,
Jackie Tolman (Director of Learning and Instructional Impact/ CFG Grant Manager)
and (Principal)
We can not have parents come in to visit, as in the past, but it will be a celebration within limits!

SEL message from Mrs. Weston
Greetings Hiawatha Families!
We are now moving into the 3rd SEL standard here at school. Find the grade level SEL standards at our SEL curriculum map here. Our 3rd standard is about goal setting; below are the schoolwide learning targets:
I can talk about things that are hard, and things that are easy for me.
I can show a growth mindset by knowing when I work on something hard, I get better at it.
I can talk with my teachers and family about hard things that I want to work on, choose goals for myself, and work on my goals.
With support I can be persistent by working on hard things, sticking with it when it gets hard, and knowing when I am making progress.
How can you extend this learning at home?
Talk with your children about our schoolwide vocabulary:
Persistence: Not giving up on something that you think is hard.
Effort: Using your body and brain to learn something or to get something you want.
Goal: Something that is hard and that you want, that you have to work hard to get .
Obstacle: Something new or hard between you and your goal. You put effort and persistence into obstacles to get to your goal .
Growth Mindset: Knowing that, with practice, you can get better at something.
Talk about growth mindset and perseverance, modeling your own as well.
Think out loud when you make mistakes or encounter obstacles, and use positive self talk to model growth mindset to your children.
Routinely model and talk about your own goals. Talk about times that you were stuck and you used strategies and help from others to keep going. Talk about your own motivation tools.
Notice and discuss with children when they are being perseverant (e.g., “I know how hard that was, but you never gave up. You kept on going. I’m very proud of you, and you should be proud of yourself”). Help children think through and suggest alternatives when they encounter obstacles.
Use the short videos at the link here for discussing concepts of perseverance and goal setting. Discussion prompts included.
Take good care of yourselves and be in touch if you wish.

Parking Lot Safety
Dear Families,
Our bus company is reporting many students/families walking in between buses during the afternoon dismissal. With blind spots all around the bus, this is a very dangerous practice for families who walk, bike, or pick up their students.
The EWSD would like to remind families of the 'danger zone' around the bus and ask that you only use designated sidewalks and crosswalks at schools. Thank you!
Winter Lights in the Park
Take a walk through Maple Street Park in Essex Jct and enjoy the lights accompanied by festive music. Pick up a scavenger hunt list on your way into the park to see if you can you find all the hidden ornaments in the trees
All ages welcome every day until January 1st from 5:00PM to 8:00PM
