Middle School Counseling
In mid-December Mrs. Johnson welcomed the newest member of her family, a beautiful and healthy baby girl. She will return to ISB in mid-May. During her leave Mr. Rich is serving as a long-term substitute counselor. Mr. Rich has over four decades of experience as an educator and is very familiar with our school, having served as a long-term substitute counselor here previously.
Mr. Rich will be working primarily with 6th and 7th grade students. Looking ahead to high school transition, 8th graders will work with our high school counselors from now through their ISB high school experience. 8th graders with last names beginning with A-N will work with Ms. Hirsch and students with last names beginning with O-Z will work with Mrs. Muilenburg.
For Counseling Department Information, please see the Counseling page on our school website.
Kids in the Game

2020 Preparedness Summer Camp in Alaska
FEMA Region 10 is calling on students ages 14 to 17 from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska to apply for the second annual Youth Preparedness Camp to be held this summer near Anchorage, Alaska. The 40 teens selected to attend the all-expense-paid camp will come away with skills that could save lives in their homes and communities during a disaster – all while making new friends and having fun!
The six-day, five-night camp, hosted and staffed by camp and emergency management professionals, will teach students how to safely assist in the immediate aftermath of a disaster. Subject matter experts and local emergency responders will provide leadership and team-building opportunities and introduce campers to a variety of emergency response professions. As part of the program, campers will identify and develop a concept for a longer-term project aimed at utilizing their new skills and improving preparedness in their communities.
Students wishing to be considered for the July 26-31, 2020 camp can find application information on the FEMA website. Applications will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. PST on January 19, 2020.
For further information regarding the camp, please call 425-487-4943 or email:

Beaverton School District Inclement Weather Information
When the weather outside gets inclement, school schedules could be affected. The District generally makes inclement weather decisions by 5:15 a.m., posting them by 5:30 a.m. on the District website and on social media. All Portland Metro area media outlets are also notified and announce the information on TV newscasts and online. Parents and guardians that have opted in for SchoolMessenger will receive timely notifications.
The District makes decisions based on the ability to operate school buses safely; the ability of parents and students to drive safely; and the ability of students to walk safely. The decision that is made will be for the entire District. (As always, parents may choose to make different decisions based on their particular location.)

Culture Week Volunteer Opportunities
Culture Week is at the end of the month! For those new to ISB, Culture Week is a volunteer organized week of workshops, assembly speakers, and lunch time activities centered around a theme. The week sits between the two semesters at ISB. This year the theme is Sports and Leisure Around the World. We have ex-professional athletes, dragon boats, Irish dancing, mahjong, and paralympians coming, to list just a few! 35 workshops, 3 assembly speakers – your fellow parents have put together an amazing week for the students. We still need volunteers to make this go smoothly though. Please sign up to help here.
