LIBRARY NEWS
Barnes & Noble Champions In-Store Book Fair will take place this Saturday, February 7th. Store hours are from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., and we will have special events between 12 noon and 2 p.m.. Special events include our staff story time in the children's section, a Valentine bookmark craft, and our 5th grade choir will perform at 1:00. Also, bring your cameras and snap a picture with Sadie, our Bak Pak dog! Please remember to mention Hamilton Elementary at the beginning of any transaction including café' purchases (coffee, smoothies, cheesecakes and treats help, too!).
If you can't make it to the store on Saturday, online purchases between 2/7 and 2/12 also help. On the payment page, be sure to click 'bookfair order' and enter code # 11556933. Click here for more information: http://tinyurl.com/l3znnty
#bookitforward is a movement promoted by Kid President. We would like to participate by combining #bookitforward with our classroom library book drive in preparation for the book fair. Make room on your shelves at home by donating like-new books to Hamilton. Take a picture of your student with the books to be donated and post it on Face Book, Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #HESbookitforward AND #bookitforward. Bring the books to the Hamilton Library where teachers will be able to select books for their classrooms!
The Name That Book grade level competitions are complete. We are proud of all 81 3rd, 4th and 5th graders who read as many of the 100 books as possible. The competition was tough, and the following teams emerged victorious:
3rd grade: Nathan Wei, Erwin Kingston and Krish Dhanuka
4th grade: Ziana Sundrani, Sankavi Gownder, Crystal Gooding, Phoebe Vannier, Maggie Ni, Carrigan Royer
5th grade: Syna Sogi, Kylie West, Arie Omirin, Caroline Wei, Celeste Robinson and Riley Thomas

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
Core Essentials:
For February, our Core Essential “Word of the Month” is Kindness. This is showing others that they are valuable by how you treat them. To emphasize the importance of this word, I will be doing fun guidance lessons in every classroom, and I will be giving all students of Hamilton Elementary a daily challenge to work on through February (and hopefully beyond)! I will be challenging them to think of a person each day to treat with extra kindness. This could be a friend, a teacher, a parent, a neighbor… the opportunities of whom are endless! It could be as simple as offering a smile to someone who looked like they could use one. Try to give away a smile and see how you feel! Parents, you can help your children in this challenge by bringing awareness to the meaning of kindness, and by asking them if they have fulfilled their challenge each day! Let’s show some kindness!
Horizons:
Did you know? As of February 11, we will have completed all Horizons testing for the 2014-15 school year. We have tested more than 150 students school wide! Wow! Thank you for your patience, as we have been testing four different groups daily, every single day, since our very first week back from our holiday break!
SAVE the DATE: Please be looking for your child’s GT results to come home with your child on the following dates:
Kindergarten: February 24
First- Fifth grades: April 28
**If you are interested in having your child tested for the Horizons Program, your next opportunity to refer your child will begin October 1, 2015. Be looking for that information in next year’s newsletter.
