LMS Tiger Talk
January 20, 2022
Principal's Message
While it was only a four-day school week for us this week, it certainly was a busy one. Our 8th-grade students were visited by counselors from LHS as they officially began the course selection process for their freshmen year at LHS, we began ELA MAP testing, students attended our Day at the Movies and we once again ended the week sporting our "Stripes" in support of the Cincinnati Bengals. Still hoping for that chance for a visit from the Cincinnati Bengals for a school-wide pep assembly and rooting on the team! It was a busy but fun week at LMS.
On Feb. 6th at 7:00 PM in the LIS Media Center, the M/INT PTSA will be holding a special parent presentation with Dr. Emily Harris from Children's Hospital on the topic of "Child and Adolescent Mental Health Q&A". You can find more information below about the details of this event, and we hope that you are able to attend to learn more about the facts that influence our student's mental health and social and emotional development. Thank you to our PTSA for making this opportunity available to all.
We hope that you have a lovely weekend. As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns. We're always here to help.
Take care and Go Tigers!

LMS Principal

Research Findings on E-cigarettes from Health Services Team
A Link Between E-cigarettes, Heart Arrhythmias, and Sudden Cardiac Arrest:
The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) has reached epidemic proportions amidst perceptions that it is safer than smoking. In the past 4 years, youth use of e-cigs has surged, with more than one-quarter of high schoolers and one-tenth of middle schoolers in the United States reporting current use before the COVID-19 pandemic.
With sudden cardiac arrest in young adults being a very hot topic right now, our health services team thought this would be a good time to share some research done by the University of Louisville. This study has shown that the solvents or chemicals used in vape pens or e-cigarettes have the potential to impact the electrical activity of the heart.
“Our findings demonstrate that short-term exposure to e-cigarettes can destabilize heart rhythm through specific chemicals within e-liquids,” said Alex Carll, assistant professor in the UofL Department of Physiology who led the study. “These findings suggest that e-cigarette use involving certain flavors or solvent vehicles may disrupt the heart’s electrical conduction and provoke arrhythmias. These effects could increase the risk for atrial or ventricular fibrillation and sudden cardiac arrest.” “The findings of this study are important because they provide fresh evidence that the use of e-cigarettes could interfere with normal heart rhythms – something we did not know before,” Bhatnagar said.
Given this new information, we need to understand the additional potential risks of vaping among teens and adolescents. We wanted parents to have this information in order to open the door for conversations about vaping and e-cig use and its potential risks to the cardiovascular system.
Here is the link to the study. Additionally, if you would like to learn more about the use of vaping among middle and high school students, please see the attached for information regarding a presentation at UC Blue Ash, "Don't Hide Behind the Smokescreen", taking place on Thurs, Jan. 19th at 6:30 PM.
