Holidays Around the World
.... in my own backyard.
Holidays = Traditions
Holidays around the world are all about the traditions that cultures, families, religions, and countries have established over generations. Here are a few of my family's favorite traditions and memories.
Decorations
Each year when we pull out the decorations, there are always my favorites... an ornament handmade for me while we lived in Cherokee, the things I made in kindergarten that my parents saved for me, the ornaments that my grandparents would purchase with each year's dates of them. Each holiday decoration is more than a symbol of Christmas, rather it is a symbol of family and love.
Creche
One of my favorite parents of each year is setting up the nativity scene, or creche. My mother would collect more and more pieces of the French creche scenes on each of her trips to Europe, and in the age of the internet, she amassed quite a collection. David and I have our own sets of nativity pieces carved from olive wood from Israel.
Songs & Family
Some other favorite parts of our holiday traditions are...
- baking cookies
- homemade Buckeye candies
- family church on Christmas Eve
- riding around checking out local Christmas lights
- Nat King Cole's "The Christmas Song"
- The Grinch shirt!
